  • MXR Super Badass Distortion

    this pedal rules.

it adds an awesome marshall-style channel to your amp, and does it with flexibility and fantastic tone.

i tried it through the clean channel on my fender HRD and my mesa F30 - basically a perfect solution for me. i needed a classic gain sound that would work for a wide variety of tunes and styles, and this is perfect. it's a very marshally flavor, which i was looking for. i love the gain channels on my amps, and this is just different from the fender gain channels (surprisingly sweet on the newer III series hot rods) and mesa dirt (more modern).

that 3 band eq is AWESOME. more pedals should do this.

it stacks very very well with my fuzz and greeh rhino. sounds great with singles and humbuckers.

i've been looking for a pedal like this for a long time.

    well done, MXR.

Yup, it's a sweet pedal. I've had it since Christmas, and I hardly turn it off. I found that I like it boosting an already crunchy sound better than just running through the clean channel. Just adds an extra something that you don't notice until it's not there.

you're right - it seems to work very well into dirty channels, too!

      this little box is killer.

I've only heard great things about this pedal. Its been getting rave reviews in magazines, it looks like everyone who has one just loves it.

I've had it for a couple months and love it. Lots of tonal flexibility. It even sounds great with the gain almost 0, as a clean tone fattener. Sounds great with a tube screamer type pedal in front of it.

While I liked what I felt was a more modern tone of the wampler sovereign I'd had better than the mxr's, this pedal is still awesome and it's eq makes it more versatile imo. I had to return the sovereign because it's bass was just too loose and often clipped my setup. No other pedal has ever done that. Two different soverigns did it, so it's definitely a design mismatch between the pedal and how I'm set up.

Are any of you able to dial in classic rock (Joe Walsh, Ac/Dc) tones with the Super Badass?
I plugged into one briefly at GC, and I concluded that while it is super versatile, it allows you to dial in any tone you want, as long as it's metal. Even at lower gain levels, I could not hear a classic 70's British amp tone.

i'm actually really impressed at the classic tones with the gain at or below 11 oclock. i usually bump the mids a bit, keep the bass at 11-12 oclock, and adjust treble to taste based on the clean tone. my prs with dimarzio 36ths and my les paul with 57 classics both sound awesome for a more classic crunch tone with this setup.

the pedal with certainly do awesome higher gain well, but the lower gain tones are equally impressive, imho.

Yea.. You can get classic rock tones out of it. You may have to back off on the guitar vol a bit depending on the what your base tone is and how hot your pickups are. What is is really great about the SBA is using it as Lead Pedal for an already nice classic rock rhythm tone.

My guitars are Strats with either Dimarzio Chopper or Dimarzio Injector pickups on the bridge - Area's in the other spots. Or Les Paul's with 57 Classics. Sounds good with my 490R/498T SG special as well. Have not tried with my other Les Paul (Dimarzio SD / Duncan 59). Did not sound so great with my EMG equipped Strat though.

About time they get one right.

Let's face it, until the past 3 years the brand MXR was not associated with top distortion tones.

The last one I liked before this was the original Distortion + Although i should add in the late 70's there weren't a lot of options.
