Re: Reverb or Delay? Or Both?

Oh yeah - I grew up in the 80's and played in a cover band.

I have done Police/U2 and used MULTIPLE delays. No reverb in that case.

Delay. 12-bit digital for clear but full-toned delay, or analog for soft-edged repeats.

when I do use them, I use them together

one subtle delay and TWO reverbs stacked (one subtle and short and the second lengthened to suit the part and more prominent)

I wouldn't mind having a nice delay with a little modulation going on at the same time though - like the Earthquaker Devices Disaster Transport - which has a touch of vibrato you can mix with the delay. I'd probably use that instead of reverb, and I wouldn't replace the reverb on my existing boards, but I'd build a new small board with it on it. I have a 'verb on two boards that I dedicate to different guitars, and no reverb or delay on a third board, which has an H&K Tube Rotosphere that gives me plenty of "space". Whether it's reverb, or delay, or something like the Rotosphere, I like some kind of modulation or time based pedal at the end of the chain to thicken up the sound a bit and provide some added dimension.

            There's your problem

I prefer an analog unit, even though i am a big fan of the digi-RE-20.

Digital and Analog both have their place in the world.

And these dys, there are some very very good faux analog sounds. The Modtone Analog delay is totally digital. Many pedals have a "analog" mode switch.

The delay on the Visualsound H2O is all digital I do believe...while the chorus is analog.

Re: Reverb or Delay? Or Both?

my reverb is on the fritz in my main gigging amp, so ive not bothered with it for the last few gigs.
I've always been a bit of a reverb addict (maybe cos ive played a lot of solo guitar gigs and minimal 2 piece jazz things). In a bigger band mix tho, ive been really enjoying the no frills and extra presence of no reverb on the amp and just play nice and pocket and let the room do the work.

Both. A little bit of the springs in my Mark V + a light single repeat from one channel of an Analog Man ARDX20, and if I want more I switch to the other channel that is set up a bit heavier with about three repeats. Some time just the springs though.

I got one of those a few months ago. I love that pedal. I still have a Maxon AD-900 for analog delay, but that little Earthquaker reverb/delay pedal is fantastic. I just call it my 'BIGNESS' pedal.
