I find that Marshall type amps work great for that kind of thing. Fenders are great too but for that touch-y distorted sound the Marshall amps really do shine.

Yeah, I accidently did this a few weeks ago.. by that I mean, I left my pedal board in my garage for some reason when I was running late for rehearsal.. it was a liberating experience just plugging into the amp, cranking it up and just using dynamics to get the sounds I needed.. I loved the punchy response, and rich harmonics you speak of.. my drummer commented it was refreshing to see me just playing guitar instead of fiddling with my board all the time.. it actually inspired me to build a smaller board for my Tribute bands I work in as well.. I always keep my Thomas Organ wah pedal in the car if I need it tho

I'd love to be in a position where I could turn up the amp enough to do this.......I've got this fantasy of building a Fender Deluxe Reverb from a kit and simply turning it up. But its too loud for the home and I don't play out.

Also I'd still need the pedals to be able to do all the variety of music I want to play.

Do you live in an apartment.?
Anyway...if you are building, build a Champ (of one type or another)... about 5-7 Watts.

              Cool!

I am returning to that direction as well. Especially, after finishing my DIY 5E3... All I have is a clean boost pedal for solos and all...

I go back and forth on the whole pedal thing. I sell them off, I but new ones...or sometimes the same type I sold off when I miss a certain sound. When I'm practicing at home I almost always plug straight in. While I like the sounds of delay, wah, tremolo and flanger sometimes I usually only want clean, kinda dirty, and raunchy. These I can get by turning the amp up a fair but and adjusting my guitar's volume control.
