  • NPD: Nano Big Muff PI.

I may have mentioned that my wife got me a gift card to George's Music. (A local music store.) I put it in my wallet and forgot about it, because at the time, there really wasn't anything I needed. I pulled it out last week and decided to use it. This caught my eye:

I'm loving this thang! It's almost more of a "fuzz" than most fuzzes I've played. Their is no "soft", or OD position. It's pure distortion. At any setting. But, it's good distortion. I've been sitting here today comparing this thing to my Soul Food, Uberschall, and YJM308. (Note the similarity between the Muff and the Soul Food.) I bet the difference is a cap, or resistor, or two.

Anyway, this is one of the most fun pedals I've played with in awhile. I'm just slammin' some Barre chords, and doing some simple pentatonic scales along to some techno and blues. This thang is fun. Real fun.

Anyone else tried one of these?

I assume its just a smaller form factor Muff? If so, glad you are experiencing and loving the Muff. Tons of fun for both rhythm and lead. The tone stack is very unique on the Muff circuit, there are a lot of unique sounds available.
    Oh no.....

    Oh Yeah!

Yes. That's my understanding. I don't have the big form version to compare to. I just know I like this. It's fun.

I played one giant Muff in a GC once and really enjoyed it. For some reason since then I have gotten into almost always paying more hoping for something magical. I need to have a Muff ... if not on the board at least in the closet with the multitude.
I am so close to retirement that I could play in a band full time. All I have to do is figure out what to use instead of money, improve my playing, learn some songs, and find some other musicians more talented than me who will do exactly as they're told. .

Muff and any of those other pedals are not that similar, for sure. The Muff is a full on wool and grind machine. Mid scooped, and thick like a milkshake. I have a Russian one, and it's absolutely lovely.

I have been wanting one but find EHX to be noisy. How is that pedal?

I've not found the nano stuff to be particularly noisy, barring power supply issues. Of course, super high gain can have some hiss, but not anything unexpected.

I have one version or another of just about every EH pedal that's been made, def. all the O.D. pedals. The Nano's are great little things! The idea is to give you "the best" of each pedal in smaller & less expensive package & they do a pretty good job with the Nano versions that I've tried! I would not give up my PI or any of my other "Big Box" pedals for them, but they do take up a lot less space on a board than their big bro's? Oh, there's a little more going on under the hood that a tone cap or resistor, the Soul food is more of a clean boost & clear-ish overdrive, a la Klon clone, using silicone diodes, instead of Germanium ones & it's switchable from buffered to true bypass, where the Big muff is more of a true Distortion pedal & only true bypass, witch is almost always better anyway? I guess it really doesn't matter much as long as you like it? If you want to know what the difference between the two is I can walk you through it but it's boring & irrelevant unless you want to mod or build them??? I spent two years collecting MXR pedals because I thought they were the best thing since sliced bread, then I bought a soul food, I bought it because I was running quite a long pedal chain & really needed to add a buffered bypass pedal to regain some tone loss? After I bought that & found out how much I loved it I started to try out some other E-H pedals, "that's the sound" I said! I've been buying & using them since! Great gear, almost indestructible, & very versatile! The only problems that I've had with noise was due to sketchy power supply's, after I bought a good power brick they were no more? Another thing you should keep in mind is although they are 9v some of the bigger E-H pedals run off a 500 ma supply instead of 100 ma's, this applies to the Holy Grail reverb & 1 or 2 others as well? Typically, if the pedal runs off 500 ma's they will send a supply with it. Just look into it if you buy a pedal used, they may have lost the book & supply? I accidently plugged my Super Comp into a 500 ma slot & didn't realize it until it stopped working one day, fried it like an egg!!!

Love the Muff. I have the big brother American made one. Great pedal, everyone should have one. There are some great options for fuzz pedals out there but personally, I like to go Muff diving.

I just got one. Years ago I had the Lil' Big Muff which I loved, played through a Marshall. The weekend I got the Nano Big Muff and I'm playing it through the clean channel of my 5150 III 50 watt amp, and I'm not a bi fan of it as I was the Lil' Big Muff. Maybe it's cause I'm using a different amp

Noise, per se, isn't a problem, but hum is. Not terrible, but you can definitely hear it with this pedal and none of the others. If I disengage the pedal, or roll the volume of the guitar down, it goes away, but with the pedal engaged, there's a distinctive 60hz hum. It's drowned out as soon as you start to play, however.

I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek, but you can change the gain of an op amp with one resistor, and change the frequency response with one cap. (Input or output.) So, technically, you could dramatically change the tonal character of a pedal with one cap and one resistor. I imagine EH did more than that.

Good info 2many, but I want to take issue with your last sentence. A power supply, or power brick, only provides voltage. The pedal itself will draw the amount of current it needs. Plugging a lower current device into a higher power supply shouldn't hurt anything. Ie., I can plug a wallwart or a space heater into the same electrical outlet. The wallwart won't "fry". Maybe something else was wrong.

Maybe? It just died one day after I'd had it about 3 months, it looks brand new? After I noticed it was plugged into the 500 ma slot I just thought that made the most sense? Perhaps it was just time for it to die? Honestly, I guess I'm not used to seeing MXR pedals crap out, @least not without a darn good reason? They normally last forever, but they can't all be perfect so maybe I just got a bad one? A friend had told me to call them & see if they would replace it because it was only 3 months old & from my other dealings with their customer service they probably would have, but I didn't feel right about it because I thought it was my fault or something I did. Oh well, too late now, I just bought another one the same night that it happened. It's been running strong since!!! If anyone wants to try & fix it for themselves they can have it? Just cover whatever it cost me to ship it, I wouldent think more than 6 or 7 bucks?

Hay Artie, I'm not sure if my last P.M. act. got sent but the pedals will be on the way soon, I should be able to get them in the mail in the next day or so? I'm going to try to get them out today but I can't or shouldn't be driving right now because of my hand & unlike some other people who shalt be named I don't live in sunny, warm FL, I live in northern NH where it's -24* outside right now so I'll have to have my girl drive me down. I lived in Tampa for a while, I miss the hell out of it every winter!!!!

ALL the dirt is from a Big Muff !
                              (...the above clip)

I always loved the Big Muff. It was the 1st dirt box that i got, when i switched over from acoustic to electric.
At the time, i did not know what a Big Muff was. I bought it on the recommendation of the sales clerk . . . and never looked back.
