    Re: Low gain'ish od proto

    Digging the creativity.
I think my love of drive pedals from boost to gain will last as long as I can hold a guitar.
How about "MatrixDrive" or is that copyright? Gainstage is cool but taken by a really great pedal and blogger. It beats fatboy22, which come to think of it is pretty cool name.
"A great player can make just about anything sound decent, a poor one can make great gear sound bad.
You know what they say, 'if you cannot hear the problem, it does not exist, ...for you."

I insist you hate me because I am pretty.

^Will dig out a name for that thing....
And a different look...as I do not work for CM anymore
Anyways here is the chord stuff clips...just hammering away without much thought, all kinds of chords that normally would go nasty with drive and other stuff.
Used the Tele and the HiSchall amp...this time I turned it up some more to realistic levels.

Yeah, that's right in the ballpark. Sounds great, fantastic. Well, it does to me anyway as I always have a bunch of amps of varying sizes so that whichever one is used does most of the work and only needs subtle boost/ overdrive to get to the hot spots. (I find that relying on a pedal too much compromises the core sound of the guitar, the frequency response suffers .... usually thins out too much). Your clip sounds like the low end is staying intact and not getting compromised.

I also think the lower gain allows for (or retains) more 'touch expression' and stays away from the compression that seems to come from heavy overdrive. Plus a guitar's own characteristics remain in tact at the low end of the dirt scale, as the dirt increases, the subtleties of a guitar's voice begin to get compromised. In this chord clip, it's always distinctly a Tele.

Yup, I love it. It seems to be the area I always look for in any overdrive pedal, but in most such pedals, that area is only a small part of their range at the 'lower' end, that can make it very difficult to dial in to the subtle zone with much accuracy because they're capable of a much wider range, most of which is simply too much for my applications.

I'm definitely interested in this if there might be a possibility, and would welcome your input on things like getting the most natural 'bypassed' sound and any other relevant thoughts. Although I build valve amps, I am not too clever with s/s circuitry, and I live and die with simplicity ... basically a good guitar and amp (non master volume as much as possible) and something I can step on to make the whole thing step up to the next level. After that, it's up to me to do something with it.

(Having spent 45 years playing and listening to others play, it is very evident to me that more dirt = less projection into the room, and the trick to sounding bigger is to use a little less gain than one might imagine is required. It puts more responsibility on the player, and if I can't take that responsibility after all these years, I should give up. Fortunately, I don't really know any other way, hehe).

Ok I'll get a one off done, I made this one for the very same reasons that you are stating.
One of the toggles is for a cleaner kind of clipping, and the "body" of the driven sound can be adjusted as well, so that it can give that nice feel even at low low drive(almost no clipping)
I'll write down a few pointers for what it does later on

                  Re: Low gain'ish od proto

I'd just like to say with pride, humility, gratitude and happiness, that this very pedal now lives at my house. I only ever use one overdrive pedal, and this one will now be it, for the rest of my days.

It's early days and I'm still experimenting (with a complete new recording setup as well as this pedal) but I will post some clips as soon as I am a little more comfortable with all the processes involved.

I can say that this is truly a great specialised low-gain device that allows wide ranges of control over the narrower sonic window that is usually very difficult to dial in with the standard ranges of overdrive and distortion pedals. Not only is it wonderful in front of a tube amp, but I've recorded it directly into the 'guitar DI' input on my new audio interface (Audient iD22) and amazingly it sounds excellent, not the usual overly-splatty grit-fest one usually expects when plugging dirt devices directly in to s/s devices.

I was always interested in the original premise of this thread, and Niels has masterfully nailed what he set out to do, in my humble opinion. In my view, this is the kind of pedal that will work best for those who already have a good guitar and amp sound, and have developed a decent degree of 'touch' in their playing. With those elements in place, this can subtly make things sound huge with just the right amount of edge and hair to retain dynamics and enhance the players' sonic intentions.

Hopefully I can do it justice when I am able to present some clips. I'll start a new thread at that point, with more thoughts and opinions. In the meantime, big thanks to Niels, and also big congratulations on doing such an awesome job of mastering what can be a very tricky, subtle, finnicky little sonic area between clean and dirt.

More to come in the near future ....
