Empress also makes a single channel distortion pedal, which is one side of the heavy. I don't know if it also has a noise gate, though.
My experience is that if the amp isn't voiced for a modern sound on its own, no pedal will make it sound that way. Maybe I just tried the wrong pedals, but I tried a lot. That said, the Truetone OD's are really nice. Especially if you can find an Open Road and stack that on your amp's dirt or with a distortion pedal...or a V3 series dirt pedal... V3 Jeckyl and Hyde might get you close; but the voicing of the amp will always be a factor.

That's the only reason I haven't acquired a treble booster by now due to the need for cranking an amp with the treble booster engaged in order to get those sweet overdriven tones. I've never been a crank it to 10 kinda guy. Maybe that's why I still have my hearing intact at my age.

The only way to get modern metal out of that amp is to run it clean and run a Bogner Uberschall or SD Palladium or similar into it.

I don't have one but, the Fulltone Plimsoul is supposed to have a wide range from OD->Distortion->Fuzz. The Wampler Velvet Fuzz has similar OD->Distortion->Fuzz capabilities as well.

I agree with others than an OD is probably not gonna get you the Metal tones.

If you are wanting something for Metal I would suggest taking a look at the Mad Professor Stone Grey or EHX Metal Muff w/Top Boost.

i agree, i think you are probably better served using the amps dirty channel for blues/rock and the clean channel with a high gain pedal for metal. you could set the clean tone + pedal for your rhythm tone and set the dirty channel + pedal as your lead tone. leaving the pedal on to get the gain and just setting the dirty channel for a touch more volume and grit

I can recommend a great OD pedal (the 805) but I don't think the Classic 30 has the low end to remain tight. Not enough gain. You might check out the Palladium, though, which will add more than enough gain into a clean amp.

I had a Classic 50 head a while back and it was not much of an amp for gain. You could hit hard rock levels with it and a good pedal, but metal may be out of reach.

I don't think the Classic 30 will have enough preamp gain on tap to get into metal territory. Do let us know how you get on!

Thanks for the info. You may be right. I was trying to not get a distortion pedal at all, just wanted the amp to do it's thing. I know it wasn't meant for it but would like to see if I can get close without one.

    OD Recommendation

Hey guys! I have a Peavey Classic 30 with the blue mods done on it and a Hellatone (v30) speaker. I'm trying to get a bit more low end gain out of it. I've been researching a few OD's, namely the Timmy, OCD and Green Rhino. Anyone used these or recommend something else? Mainly looking for a more modern metal tone. I can fudge around with tubes here soon to try and get a little more out it that way also. Thanks guys!!
