  • NMCODD - New Modern Classic Overdrive Day

I’ve never had an OCD before and thought why not? It’s one of the most popular drive pedals of all time and I think the Fulldrive 2 is the best SD-1/TS9 based circuits, so let’s give it a shot. This is a V1.4 from Reverb, great condition and a nice price.

First impressions don’t disappoint, something I really like is how usable it is from LP low gain to HP high gain. Not as spongy as the JFET based Marshall in a box pedals, but not as stiff as a Distortion+ style circuit. More touch responsive too. Of course it stacks well with the FD2 for focused leads too. I’m enjoying it so far.

The interesting thing is that many people claim the Dan side of the D&M Drive is OCD based, and while you can get them very similar it certain settings, it doesn’t seem like a clone to me. I feel like the OCD has a wider range of usable gain, especially on the low side. (D&M doesn’t need that, since the Boost side is incredible but still) Anyway, still on the long quest for the ultimate mid sized board. 69->FD2->OCD may be a winner.

Two mainstays on my board, OCD, and FD2...

Great pedal. One of my favorite overdrives. Can't remember which version mine was but I think it was the same as yours. It was whatever the latest version was a few years or so ago. It's one that can be left on all the time and is very responsive. That's one thing I liked about it. With my amp set for a little bit of breakup, the OCD would let me dial in a killer AC/DC tone.

The toggle switch is actually Low Pass / High Pass.

Never owning one, how does it compare to a regular TS-based drive?

It's not in the TS family, it's more of a distortion pedal that uses FETs for clipping.

It’s much flatter, although still some midrange hump. The clipping is shunt to ground like a DS-1, Distortion +, etc. so a much “harder” distortion. Also it’s got the Fulltone style tone control, so rather than cutting and boosting high midrange like a TS, it’s up in the Treble area (I prefer that). I think there’s something going on at the Input stage to make it more touch sensitive, but I’m not sure.

It souns like it might be close to the Forza or Dirty Deed, then, with the flatter EQ.

It uses MOSFETs. But same idea. It also has a GE diode on one leg for asymmetrical clipping.

I have a Joyo Ultimate Drive which is a clone. Sounds great but I removed the GE diode to get a smoother distortion.

MOSFETs are a type of FET, I should have been more specific

Another vote for the FD2 --> OCD Combination.

The FD2 in an underappreciated pedal.

Right. But not the usual JFET. [emoji2]
