As far as the similarity between SD and Tech 21, I guess they wanted pictures that suggest some sort of action without actually using video. It is probably common rock n roll design aesthetic.

It is a little plate that says 'Custom Made'. I think it is there to hide the original tailpiece studs (or look like it does).
