As long as we are going here - a current item that someone needs smacked in the head with, that falls into the "Anything for a buck" fail:

Adam Jones Silverburst LP STANDARD
- Silverburst never came in Standard. Just make a Standard Silverburst if that's what you want
- Jones used a Custom exclusively
- The 70's guitars had maple necks, the standard has a mahogany
- Custom block inlays vs crowns...
- Jones plays a Duncan Distortion (only pickup for a Silverburst, really, IMO), the Standard doesn't;t even have a 500t!!!
- All for $2999

Meanwhile - Epiphone makes a Custom with ALL good stuff (including maple neck/ebony) for $1499

So basically, you get a unique colored standard, missing one pickup cover, for $3k - seriously? Just no.

In the mid '80s I believe Gibson did do a very small run of tear drop silverburst standards with ebony fretboards. They have also done other silverburst standards, but always with an edge burst, not a teardrop. When I bought my first LP back in 1989 I was stuck between one of those very rare Standards, and a Tobacco Burst '71 LP Standard. I went with the '71.

I've had two of the Adam Jones LP Standards, and still have one. They're great guitars, and I am not caught up on the lack of maple neck. Tbt I bought the one I kept as a platform for mods, and it currently has a Duncan HB sized Dynasonic clone in the neck with a variable treble bleed circuit, and a BG Pure 90 in the bridge with a no load tone control.

I don't get the hate as they are a fairly limited production guitar with custom appointments you won't find on any other Gibson unless you pay $5 grand more and wait 18 months for a Made to Measure. I'm not even a big Tool fan, I just love the specs on the guitar. I had a Made to Measure 3xP90 LP Custom at the same time, and do not feel that guitar was worth $5,000 more than the AJ LP Standard.

I have the new Dod 250(yes, not the legendary one), Dod YJM308 and MXR YJM. Actually I don't have MXR YJM anymore because I sold it right after testing it. It is very high pitched and noisy compared to other pedals. YJM308 is already noisy. Probably MXR makes a more spiky noise because its treble frequencies are high.

My sponsor will soon release a YJM308 version. We did the prototype tests together and the noise is 50-60% less than the Dod YJM. It also has 3 different gain modes.

dunlop has done a bunch of fuzzface pedals. the hendrix one is different than the others, its own flavor, so i dont see any issue with it being available to satisfy that early silicon ff sound

I agree. However, the Hendrix Estate was prevented for decades from using Jimi's name, compounding the fact that he was exploited by his managers for years. Jimi died broke and the family got nothing. It's only fair that his sister and brother finally receive something, and I believe Jimi would support that.

I am sure he would. His managers and business people picked his legacy clean, leaving his family with nothing. It is a bad situation all around. But people buying a Hendrix Fuzz Face should just look for a regular Fuzz Face.

i dont have an issue with companies putting out clones of unobtainable stuff do to age or rarity, but if theres tons of the original out there for decent prices... seems like a money grab/marketing game

Building gear the signature artist never uses/never used. This is extremely common.

Alex Lifeson has the Lerxt amps and Bytor pedals and I have not seen him use an amp in years. Last interview I read he was using a Macbook and Geddy has been going direct for years.

true, but most dont have that skill. im good at a lot of things when it comes to guitar related stuff, but not modding pedals other than simple things.

like i have a way huge camel toe mkii that i would love to mod so i could use each side independently and have the option to switch the order of the two sides (a->b or b->a) but that is beyond my skills

Why buy a bare bones distortion designed to someone else's spec when I have the skillset to build one to my spec?

Agreed. Get the vintage one, get the standard one, or at least get a version that does a bunch of cool things the original didn't. Same with pickups.

"It's just a touch hotter version of X pickup with a little more treble". Or just keep the original and turn the gain and the treble knob a hair....

I bought another DOD 250 a few tears ago just to have one again. I also bought a Rat a DS-1 a SD-1 and a Fuzz Face mini to have the originals back in the house. I have very little desire to spend extra money on something that’s an sig model. Unless it sounds like the 250 stacked with the SD-1 then maybe. That’s what I’ve been using lately with Strats into the Origin 20 and loving it.

Meanwhile - back at Malmsteen/MXR....

And of course, the tones you know and love from the Screamin' Swede...were made with a 70's DOD 250. If that's the sound you want, get that. I am always amused at people trying to get the 2015+ tone toy by an artist whose sound was made famous by pickups, guitars, pedals, and amps 1985-1995 or so.

Why I love my Budokan. It isn't just a 3 pickup Cherry Sunburst. It isn't a signature piece. It's an exact reproduction.
