    Me again!

My son has a second hand Gibson Les Paul Special. The Pick ups are P?'s

What would you guys suggest for an upgrade. We do not want to alter the guitar. He plays rock etc.

Is it difficult to do an upgrade - could I do it my self?

      Re: Pick Up Advice

Welcome to the SD forum Curiousparent.

The pickups in that guitar are P-90s. Seymour duncan offers a few different models from vintage repros, hot models and even an aged version. Let us know what you think he might like and we can make some suggestions. I'm thinking a rock player would most like the hot variety.

There are a couple of screws that hold the pickup in place and two solder joints that need to be redone. If you can solder at all I think you can handle the installation. Just make a note of how far the pickup sets in the guitar from the strings and adjust the new pickup to the same height.

          Re: Pick Up Advice

for rock i might suggest a vintage for the neck (sp90-1n) and a hot for the bridge (sp90-2b).

youll be able to get good clean sounds and fat overdriven tones from the neck with a punchy, crunchy tone from the bridge when distorted
