hey i was wondering what pickup would be able to pull off slash, joe satriani and paul gilberts tone in a les paul custom ...if thats possible lol thanks

Re: bridge pickup for LP custom for slash/satch/paul gilbert??

In my opinion, the APH-1. We know it can nail Slash's tones, but what it offers for the other 2 tones you mention is clarity. Satch and Vai are fairly heavily processed in the sound department, and the APH-1 will handle that very well. I know I can play some Satch with my APH-1 set in my Dean Hardtail...I honestly don't play any Vai.

If you click on my soundclips down in my signature, there is a demo of the APH-1 bridge going from clean to pretty heavily overdriven.

Just my $.02

hmm, well i dont think u'll get anywhere close to PG's tone with the a2ph. well its hard to get a PGilbert tone with a les paul anyway.
as for slash's tone the a2ph works fine.
as for satch the dimarzio FRED still does the trick even in a Les Paul.
but something for all 3 would be tough to find.

You would have to get three different guitars in my opinion. That is probally the only way to even get it close

Re: bridge pickup for LP custom for slash/satch/paul gilbert??

yea i figured it would be too hard to get gilberts.....so the aph1 sounds like what i could use since they are clear enough for satch and of course its what slash uses....but how well will it go together with my 59 neck?

Re: bridge pickup for LP custom for slash/satch/paul gilbert??

i was thinking of a PG set
paul uses paf pro's which are somewhat of hotter paf types, and thats what a PG is. so maybe?

Ditto. Three different sounds. You'd need something with a lot of mids for the Satch tone and something fairly scooped for the Slash tone.

the alnico pro is very versatile so id go with that one and also becuz thats the one i own.

I've honestly never tried it with a 59' neck. Output wise you will balance fine, you may just have to try it. The 59' will be brighter, tighter in the lows and highs, but being in the neck it may be a nice balance. SD offers a 21 day exchange policy just in case you don't like what you buy. I'd buy from John at Black Rose.

thanks guys....from ur clips jeff it sounds like the aph-1 is what im looking for. ..as for the exchange policy it takes quite a few days just for a pickup to arrive here so its hard to atcually use it. also jeff what gear and settings did u use in the clips for the aph-1??

That clip was done using my Dean Hardtail thru a Boss GT-6 effects processer. I used different models for the clean and gain. The clean sounds are Fender Twin Reverb models. I can't remember all of the gain models, but the last 3 are Marshall 1959 SLP and Soldao SLO 100 respectively.

If you go back to my soundclips, the one labled APH Matched Set Demo was recoreded thru my JCM 800, miked with a SM57 straight into the soundcard. This was done with my Hardtail also. The first portion goes from the neck to middle to bridge on the clean channel, playing the same clip. The 2nd portion of the clip is actually a Vai riff that I started learning a few months ago, and then lost track of it.

thanks....you really get a sweet tone with that gear and that pickup it really did satches always with me always with you well.....its really clear and it also packs a punch when you want it too....im positive that im going for the aph-1.

Re: bridge pickup for LP custom for slash/satch/paul gilbert??

maybe an alnico pro 2? Thats what slash uses anyways. if it works for him it will work for you!

Re: bridge pickup for LP custom for slash/satch/paul gilbert??

gilbert's tone was a super distortion in parallel, so a hot humbucker with a push pull pot for parallel/series would get you the best of both worlds BUT

imo an LP is too "flabby" sounding to do gilbert shred stuff, it just isnt tight sounding enough.

saying that i saw a guy at the marshall demo room at this years guitar show near me nail a satch tone with an LP.. but he was playing summersong which is predominantly wah..
