  • what compliments a hot rail

in a basswood tele, with the rail in the bridge, what neck pickup compliments it well, as in is mean sounding, usable on its own, and will give a nice mid position

You need a fairly hot pickup with a lot of attack. Choices in Duncans are few ... best bet would be a QP Rhythm.

Have you thought of a humbucker or a mini-humbucker?

file out your body cavity and your pickguard and squeeze either a HRn or a CR in there.
      Ain't nothin' but a G thang, baby.

I have a Dimarzio HS-2 in the middle and a Hot Rail in the bridge position of an alder Strat-- wired in parallel, you achieve a nice "Dire Straits" tone in the second position when clean; and it's rather throaty when using gain.

I realized that today just before I read your response... In my experience, the ol' SD Invader is capable of making grown men weep. Something comparable with that clean seering tone may work when wired in series for a fat, but not muddy, sound. Do you need a single coil construction or a full size 'bucker?

for tele neck pups id sway the qp is as good as youre gonna get.
i think a custom minihumbucker would work great if you dont mind a little work

if the results were promissing enough i wouldn't mind a little work. actually my first instinct was to just say screw the neck pickup, put tape over the hole, and stick to the hot rail, so i'm still wondering if thats the best option or not
