  • Volume pot only reduces volume to about 1/2?

hey Kent S. or Artie...he he......... i am working on a friend of mines gibson les paul since his volume pot for the bridge pickup was totally broken........ i put in a new one, and wired it up the same, however it only rolls down the volume to about half volume when on 0.......and makes a very loud buzz when i touch it with my fingers...... im thinkin that buzz is probably a grounding problem, but perhaps it (gorunding) is related to why i only get a half way volume rolloff?...

    any help guys?

Try resoldering the #1 terminal to the chassis. You may also have a bad pot and you really need to meter it.

Quite simply it sounds like you are not getting a good ground connection to the *cold* lug of the volume pot, or one at all), listen to what Robert said, also you may have to hardwire a ground to the back of the pot if there isn't one there already. If that buzz is like the one you get when you put your finger on the tip of the cable plugged in the amp, then you have a hot wirred to the case somewhere, or the output jack leads reversed (although that would do it any place you touched ground). Like John said overheating a pot can do all sorts of things to a pot ... sometimes afterward the pot just defies all laws of normal operation. Check your grounds. All of them.

i didn't read the other posts, but, to me, it sounds like the connection to the left terminal (ground) on the volume knob isnt a good connection, or you simply fried the pot
