  • I know this has been beat to death but....

I`m finally gonna put a JB humbucker in one of my guitars (Highway 1 Strat) I`m undecied on either a 250k vol. pot or a 500k , I hear some people use the 250 to tame the brightness of the JB. I play mostly hard rock(RR,EVH,Lynch,Jake E,Warren D)and I usually just go with one vol. knob and no tone knobs but I`m not against installing one if it would help.

I'd just use the 250k's in the Hwy 1 with the JB. If it's not bright enough, you can always change the pot. I read a while ago on this forum that Seymour Duncan himself uses a 250k pot in all his guitars with the JB. That must say something about the way it's meant to be used.

Guys, I've been having this discussion with so many players, it's crazy.

Here's what I find, and this may or may not help you. I'm playing the JB with a 500k right now, and it's the first time that I've used the 500k. The 500k really opens up the pickup somewhat. It sounds less 'compressed' in terms of its tone, IMO. I like both values, it's really just taste. The best thing to do is buy two pots and go to town...one or the other may work better depending on your setup, playing style and your tone preferences.

      Just my 2 cents...good luck!

I think since Duncan himself uses the 250k pot, you know what to do!

Ordinarily I'd suggest a 500K but with no tone stack it might be shrill.
