  • Hot rails..sound like a single coil??

    Hi gang,

Thought it would be a good idea to ask the tone gurus about this one.

I LOVE the sound of the single coils in my old strat....but there are intonation probs and NOISE, NOISE, NOISE!

The hot rails look...well....hot! But do they sound like a humbucker? hope not. I wanted the sing of the single coil without the noise.

If not seymour duncan's products (which I prefer) what about Fender's noiseless hot pickups? anyone using?

    Or better yet....another solution!!

    All opinions welcome and WANTED!

    Thanks,

    Thor

You can get a single coil type of sound if you wire the hot rails in parallel or split it. Otherwise, it's a definite humbucker. I really like the parallel sound of the hot rails.

i just put a hot rails in my new telecaster i built. The hot rails bridge sounds like the invader with out as much low end, its more evenly voiced but not as even as the jb.

If you want the sound of a single without th hum, try the Duncan Classic Stack, Hot Hot Stack is wound a bit hotter with more mids and has one large rail as a polepiece. The Duckbucker looks a bit like the Lil' series humbuckers except that it has only three polepieces on teh north coil and three on the south coil. The Vintage Rail has the closest look to the HR, but it has half a rail on the north coil and hald a rail on the south coil.

I wouldn't say it has that much mids

PERFECT! Was deciding between that and a little '59 replacement for my tele, but your amazing diagram may have just made up my mind for me!

The hotrails has a pretty decent amount of bass to it as well. I think it sounds like a slightly less ballsy version of the invader.

I'd also say that the hot rails has more clarity than the invader. The invader always seemed too muddy for me, stuff just blurs together. And yes, hot rails will sound like a humbucker, not a single coil.

The hot rails is the best humbucker for crazy metal stuff I've ever tried, definately doesn't sound like a single coil at all. Why not get a duckbucker or a vintage rails, they're specifically made to sound just like single coils when they're actually humbuckers.

Hot rails are crunchy and authoratative (bloody great mate), but not that lovely when split - I agree with the hot stack or the duck 'n vintage proposals if you want cleans.

Yeah, I thought the whole point of the Hot Rails was so Strat players wouldn't need new pickguards or big holes in their gee-tars for that humbuck crunch...

Uhhmmmm if you shield your Strat most of the 60-cycle hum will disappear.
