  • Gibson Melody Maker Pickups

    Hello All,
I'm refurbishing a 1965 Gibson Melody Maker and I'm wondering if S.D. makes a pickup for it. Thanks, Paul

    Re: Gibson Melody Maker Pickups

The frontman for one of the originals projects I play in has a late 60s Melodymaker that I just re-wired for him. It's been heavily modded and now is an h/s/s guitar with the original pickups and a CC in the bridge.

The original pickups are pretty cool sounding and the CC is perfect in the bridge position. I'm not sure about the specs on those pickups but something in the SSL line might come close. It's only a guess though and I'd have to hear the SSLs in that guitar because the construction and bridge on the Melodymakers is vastly different from what i have heard the SSLs in.

The Custom Shop may have a replacement pickup for that guitar or they can probably make you one. They can also repair or rewind the original pickups if you have them available but they are not working properly.

The guy that plays the guitar I mentioned above definately gets some unique tones out of it. He lived in Traverse City and you may have heard of his band "Medicineball" if you are close to TC. If you know Tim, I'll definately give him a shout from you.

I have a 67' Melodymaker. The original PuP sounded good, But squealed
uncontrolable even in a low gain setting. I replaced it w/t a duncan Mini
humbucker witch fit in perfect without routing,And sounds great Does
anybody else have this problem w/t Melody maker PuPs?

The one set I have seen did not squeal. Poting would most likely fix that.

I trust you are talking about the Strat replacement single coil sized HBs and not true mini HBs.

If I recall correctly, are the pickups the same dimensions as a Strat pickup, about 6K and have an alnico bar magnet in the middle like a rail? I've heard they can be in there loose and cause feedback. Check this out- http://www.carvin.com/products/part....mNumber=S60N-B

Nope, It's a true Mini ( A Duncan) I just cut out a new Pickgaurd from
some pearloid I hade leftover. The body I guess is routed for P-90s from
Gibson,So it fit right in. Poting I think would work on the original MM PuP'
But it looks kinda hard to get the PuP out of the plastic cover without
breaking something.( I haven't gotten pass the piece of wood without think'in
better about it) But the mini sound's great. I'm just keeping the original in case I want to put it back to stock.

BTW, I did have a Strat hotrails in it at one time. Strat PuP will fit, But not
perfect. The screw holes don't line up,And it takes some boogering to fit.
