Iommi Pickups by Era

Can someone give me the cliffs notes rundown on the pickups Tony Iommi has used over his career? I know he's got a sig from Gibson, and isn't there a CS Duncan as well? BK has the War Pig which might be way more aggressive than his sound, but still has that name. However... wasn't he a P-90 user back in the golden era of Sabbath? Enlighten me. :scratchch

Re: Iommi Pickups by Era

well since he mainly used vintage gibson SG's back then (and still today), im guessing PAF's. I know gibson has a signature Iommy humbucker, but its REALLY HOT! its the same output as their dirtyfingers pickup and that's the hottest pickup gibson makes. As far as SD's go, my best guess would be '59s. You could try the SD custom shop and see what they could do for you.

Re: Iommi Pickups by Era

i really prefer his p90 tones from the early stuff.

checked his wikipedia article and they list his guitars and pickups to an extent.

Re: Iommi Pickups by Era

Most of Iommi's Ozzy-era Sabbath was done with a few P-90 equipped Gibson SG's.

For the last 1 or 2 albums Ozzy was with Sabbath, Iommi was using the custom 24 fret SG made by an English luther John Birch- with John Birch magnum pickups. These are what Iommi's Gibson pickups are patterned after.

After the Dio- era Sabbath, Iommi had a few custom guitars from a lutheir named JD- those had Seymour Duncan Iommi pickups in them.

I played an Epiphone SG that had the Gibson Iommi pickups in it- it sounded just like Iommi when played through a Marshall, but the guitar was begging to be downtuned

Re: Iommi Pickups by Era

The El Diablo gets pretty Iommi-ish in my Hamer. Don't know how it would fare when played back to back with Gibbby's Iommi.

Re: Iommi Pickups by Era

Isn't Scott Ian's El Diablo model the renamed Duncan Iommi?

Edit: I got curious to I looked it up. There are two Scott Ian El Diablo models. The earlier one is an over-wound Screamin' Demon, and the second one that replaces it is the renamed SH-TI1B Duncan Iommi pickup.

D.C. Resistance: 22.1 KOhms

tony plays (played?) pretty light strings sometimes heavily detuned, if you play 8's tuned down you need a beefy ass pup to give you a heavy sound. if you use heavy strings you dont need as much from the pup

Re: Iommi Pickups by Era

All his best stuff was with P-90s, what you called the "Golden Era," Aaron. If you want that classic Sabbath tone, start with a P-90 SG.

A result of his cut off finger tips and having to play with homemade prothesis tips....detuning made the stringes easier to bend and pull.

Re: Iommi Pickups by Era

they are tougher than you think but youd be out of tune all the time. they require a very soft touch which i sure dont have

Re: Iommi Pickups by Era

What is odd is people that review the Gibson Iommi pickup claim it is not a high gain metal pickup at all, sort of medium output by nature.

Re: Iommi Pickups by Era

My 1998 SG Std. with a stock 498T does a great job nailing his tone.

As for the BKP warpig, it still sounds to me more like an Iron Maiden pickup than a Sabbath pickup.

I don't think of Iommi's signature sound as particularly high-gain. It's crunchy for sure, but not wicked hot.

He used one gibson SG in the early albums then moved to custom builders like John Birch, and Jay Dee (both english). It was only recently (1999ish) that he began using actual Gibson SGs again when they released a signature model. In the later 80's he was also using/had a BC rich Ironbird, Washburn Idol, and patrick eggle guitars. He used custom builders after gibson refused to build a 24 fret left handed guitar.

Pickups by era:
the sg (what we would name a classic now) had a p90 in the bridge and a john birch pickup in the neck (magnum i believe)

When he moved on to the John Birch SG and the later Jay Dee SG (Jaydee worked for John Birch then set up his own shop that is still in production) they used John Birch Magnums or similar pickups that were double row screwhead pcikups (each string has 2 screwhards per pickup) and here overwound alot to drive his amps.

He used these pickups(and still does in the JayDee sg, the john birch was retired and is in a Hard Rock Cafe somewhere) thoughout the span of sabbath an heaven and hell.

Other companies began to design some sig pickups when Iommi was loing for a new signature guitar (before gibson came along) the washburn and possibly the ironbird had the Duncan Iommi model (now refered to as the el diablo in the scott ian guitars).

When gibson asked Iommi if they wanted to work together, they researched his old birch/jay dee pickups (x rays, materials used, etc) and designed his gibson signature pickups around these. Gibson also relesed the Custom shop SG and the Production line SG sig guitars, and later and epiphone. The gibson sigs are about 17Kohm, wheras the jaydee/birch were around 22 I think

He uses .008 LaBella strings, all his guitars have all but one volume pot disabled. He also now has a white custom shop sg with his gibson sigs and a floyd rose for use on some of the Dio era songs currently being played on tour.

all this goes into a pete cornish foot controller (for the rack setup), he uses a tychobrahe (or chicago iron reproduction rackmount version) into his signature Laney head and 4x12 cabs loaded with Celestion G12H speakers.

Same here, i have his gibbo sig pus and they are great for his style, not for chuggy metal, but long drawn out and solo not type playing.

Id say the sd custom is a great choice for an Iommi tone base

I've got an SG Classic that seems to fit the bill pretty nicely for my needs, since the Iommi tone I prefer is that of the first four Sabbath albums.

the singles will nail that early tone, obviously since that was what he used. Iomi got his Birch around vol4 or thereafter, and began using buckers.

Just like anything, the entire rig setup will affect the tone. Laney and ornage will get awsomely Iommi sounding crunch tones, certain pickups/amp combos might need a Od etc
