  • Help Modding Strat

I am looking to modify one of the two strats I own. I recently modded a 98 Amer Strat to a Double Fat config, which I am happy with, although I am not crazy about the neck on this guitar (wider than my 99 and LP Std with 60s neck). I prefer to use my strats as my main gigging guitars and, since I like the feel of the 99 better, I have decided to make some changes. Versatility is important as my band covers modern/classic rock to pop.

It is a 99 with Maple neck. I modded it a while back so I have Duncan Rails in the neck, stock coil in the middle and Lil' 59 in the bridge. I also had a toggle switch added to give me more pickup options.

First of all, like the 98, I'm going to remove one of the tone control knobs and relocate the volume and remaining tone knob to give my picking hand more freedom of movement.

Secondly, I'm considering replacing the Lil' 59 with a full sized Humbucker (with a split?).

    My questions are:

1- Is it worth replacing the Lil' 59 with a full sized Hum? If so, does anyone have any suggestions as to what pup? I have a Pearly Gates in my other Strat and Custom in the bridge of my LP and like them both.

2- I'm considering adding a concentric pot as one tone control (which will work as two). How would a 500k/500k sound vs a 250k/500k(bridge)?

Thank in advance for your help!!!

    Re: Help Modding Strat

The full sized humbuckers will sound fatter than the Lil/Jr series of humbuckers. This is because a fullsized humbucker senses more of the string than the single coil sized one does. I'd go with a 250/500 pot, as I find them to be a bit warmer and most strats are kind of this sounding at the bridge. As far as which bridge pickup to put in there? It depends on how much output you need. For high output from a strat bridge, I like the CC. It's smooth and fat with plenty of punch. For medium output, I like the Screaming Demon. I installed on in my friends new S series Ibanez last night and it rips. I tested it out through my rig and I couldn't put it down. It's a very, very fun pickup with a 250k pot iin a thin sounding guitar.
    Ain't nothin' but a G thang, baby.
