I read the FAQ section about identifying SD pickups by a number, but where is that number located? I have a JB pickup that doesn't seem to have any identifying marks at all???

Re: Where are the numbers on a SD pickup?
there should be a sticker on the bottom of the pickup.. if there is no sticker, measuring the resistance would bring you an estimate of what the pickup os.. you find the DC resistances on the duncan products page

Woody, we put the numerical stickers on pickups built after 2002. There's a list of the sticker codes here.
If you have a pickup built prior to 2002, it might have an alpha-numerical sticker like "JNJ," which is a somewhat cryptic code. In that case, the pickup would a be a Jazz Neck wound by Maricela Juarez. The FAQ explains that too.
I hope that helps.Evan Skopp, Inside Track International

That's not difficult:
Put the multi-meter at 20K (ohm) or 200k, black wire at the beginning, green wire at the end. Red & white should be soldered together.
PS
I also got an older JB which had no sticker, no logo, and longer "legs".Pickups... the final frontier.

Re: Where are the numbers on a SD pickup?
actually it doesn't matter what leads on the multimeter you connect to the hot and ground on the pickup. as long as the red and white are connected, it doesn't matter what wires you connect to. you'll get the same reading either way. if you want to know the split resistance, move either multimeter lead to the red/white connection.
i'm tempted to test the resistance of my JB with an Agilent 3458a multimeter. It's an 8.5 digit meter with 4-wire connections. that would give the most accurate reading ever.-Greg

Re: Where are the numbers on a SD pickup?
Thats not a stupid question. Its very much relevant. Its not important if its physically installed, as long as its not connected. Even then, as long as only one wire is connected, it shouldn't be a problem. However, just to be safe, it should be electrically isolated. (Not connected to anything.)
Thats so the meter won't read anything else at the same time.
