  • Gary Moore neck tone on Blues Alive

Whilst I love the sound of a Seth Lover in the neck, I find myself dreaming about the tone Gary Moore gets on the Blues Alive CD. The exact tone I'm speaking about is on the song 'Still Got The Blues'... It sounds like an alnico V magnet pickup to my ears.

So if this is true, which SD pickup is likely to get me closest to the tone? I know the equipment etc is important, but the pickup is also very important.

Out of the Alnico V neck pups, the Jazz is the one I'm leaning towards. I've tried the 59, and it simply had too much bass and I generally didn't like it very much. I think the Jazz may be what I'm looking for....

However, if we go custom pups, then a seth lover or an antiquity with an alnico V magnet might also do the trick....

    What do you think?
There's nothing quite as satisfying as a dancing banana...

I think a PG would be good for that type of tone mate. It may not get you spot on, but I think it would get you close Is this pup going in your Epi LP btw?

Gary used PAFs on that CD (Peter Greens '59 LP and a similar '59). More than likely, he had alnico-2's in it, but it is possible that a-5's were used.

For the tune "Still Got The Blues (For You)", Gary uses only one guitar; the 1959 Peter Green Les Paul. That's the guitar with the flipped pickup in the neck... You might think about the Peter Green pickup set from the Custom Shop. Remember though, Gary bases a lot of his tone on the amplification he uses....

or maybe just flip the magnet on one of the pups so they are out of phase like the greeny set

Yep, that would work. I was just trying to help Seymour's bottom line....

Actually, any type of PAF pickup will do fine....

Actually I have a lot of Gary Moore concert videos and when he plays Still Got the Blues it always seems to be on his other 59 Les Paul. The one with the uncovered PAFs. That guitar seems to be a little hotter than the Greeny LP and definitely doesn't have the "out of phase mod."

Gary's website gives specific info on his set up especially for Still Got the Blues. He uses Marshall amps but will also use some effects including a Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal and/or a tube screamer. I think a seth, AP2, or pearly gates neck would get you there. You're right about the 59 having a little too much bass but you may find that with most of the A5 humbuckers.

I would go with a higher output PAF clone but you may need to use a pedal to drive the amp a little more to get the overdrive Gary has. It's a slower bluesy song but he still has a lot of power and distortion in his set up. He just works the volume and tone knobs alot to get what he wants and control the setup.

                .

I agree. The other '59 does sound hotter. I emailed Gary's website a year or two ago, and asked if there was a difference in output between the two. They said no, but I'm not convinced. Maybe he uses different amp settings with that guitar, but it seems to have more "balls".

As for the "out-of-phase" thing, that wouldn't pertain to the neck pup alone only the combo of the two. Gary typically uses that for the "greeny" tunes, when he's doing a solo.
