Need JB and Jazz with more fatness...

I love the JB and the Jazz pickups but I've always been wondering if there was a way to get more midrange fatness out of them without compromising the tight bass and the wonderful crunch factor they provide. Anyone got any recommendations?

A mohogany body ;)

Go with Alnico 2,3,or 4 magnets. Try one of them and go from there. I would start with the alnico 4 and move downward until you find what you are looking for.

If you're on a budget, the Mighty-Mite Motherbucker (the new dual coil one) absolutely NAILS the thick JB thing. It's a 20k A5 loaded humbucker. It's cheap and sounds GREAT, IMO.

That sounds like a great idea, also another few are even a Rio grande BBQ or Dimarzio breed. Which both sound similar to the JB but with more fatness in the mids etc. Otherwise an A2 magnet or a darker sounding gat like the guys mentioned earlier.

Re: Need JB and Jazz with more fatness...

Lotsa good ideas here... as far as wood goes i just can't get away from alder, LOVE that stuff! I sounds great in mohog too i know but alder is MY sound.

I was thinking A2's might be a bit too smooth (although people have commented JB's sound great with them) so maybe a 4 or 3 would do the trick.

I used to have an older JB that had just started to degauss (lose its magnet strength) and it was noticeably smoother and a tad fatter sounding... maybe a slightly degaussed A5 is what would work for me?

I'll look into other options as well, thanks guys.

Hey can anybody tell me a SAFE way to swap magnets without destroying the pickup? I tried it with some Duncan Design/Jackson pickups a while back and after I got done carving away the massive amount of wax this thin was cocooned in the pickups just flat fell apart. :smack:

Re: Need JB and Jazz with more fatness...

I'd go for a 59N if you want fatter tone than a Jazz N. As for the JB, that is already one very strong pickup...it's pretty fat already.

You might just want to try moving the pickups closer to the strings.

Another thing to try would be to switch to 250K pots. That'll lose some of the treble, but it will also make the pickups sound like they have gained some bass and mids.

Re: Need JB and Jazz with more fatness...

what about Jessica's BitchBuckers? a hotter JB/Jazz set as far as i know. and no, they're not thought of as 'hotter' just cos the bobbins are pink

Re: Need JB and Jazz with more fatness...

a couple of ideas...

1. As others have mentioned, maybe an alnico 4 magnet would do the trick. You can get them at Allstar Magnetics, along with alnico 2, 3, 5, 8, and ceramic bar magnets. That would be the first thing I'd try

2. Try a Rio Grande BBQ in place of the JB. It has less output, but it has a nice bass and midrange response with softer highs. I agree with Lew, a '59 would be a bit fatter sounding than a Jazz.

3. Install a Clapton midrange booster kit.

Re: Need JB and Jazz with more fatness...

I just upgraded my LP from a JB/Jazz to a Custom/'59 set, great improvement in terms of fatness...
The JB/jazz combo sounds fat too but in a different way. Sorry, I'm not good with pickup descriptions.

Loosen the four brass screws on the base of the pickup, and carefully lift the bobbins using a flat head screwdriver. Gently push the mag out and replace it with the new mag.
