  • Quick wiring question

Hi, new member here. I just picked up a PRS Hollowbody Spruce with piezo that had a Seth Lover and Antiquity installed. For some reason, when blending the magnetic and piezo pickups I get virtually no volume, which a reputable source has said must be a phase problem. I've printed out the wiring diagram off this site for two hums, a volume, tone and 3-way. My question is this - what wires do I reverse to change the phase of the pickups? I assume the black wire to the 3-way remains. The green that goes to ground must need the be bundled with either the red or white?

I know nothing about this, but have friends who can solder if I just tell them what wires to change out.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

    Re: Quick wiring question

You have a couple of options. If I recall, PRS uses an LR Baggs piezo system. The Baggs piezo system I have on my Strat uses a circuit board for the mixing control, and there is a switch on the board that allows you to change the phase of the piezo. Or, simply swap the black wires with the green wires on both pickups.

Thanks for the quick reply. So just take both black wires off the 3-way and replace them with the green ones, and send the black and bare to ground? That doesn't sound too involved.

      Thanks again!

I just looked at this wiring diagram and noticed that the two pickups I have in this guitar (Seth Lover and Antiquity) use only two conductors. It says to see the "humbucker conversion" but I don't know what that means. Does this mean I only have a green and black wire and still just need to switch them, or something else?

Now that I think about it, an even easier way to fix the phase problem would be to open up both pickups and flip the magnets. Since neither pickup is wax potted, you won't have to worry about that. Just remove the cover if there is one, remove the tape from around the perimeter of the coils, slide the magnet out, flip it over, then slide it back in, replace the tape, and replace the cover. The only thing you might have trouble with is removing the solder that holds the pickup covers on, if they are covered pickups. But anyone who is familiar with soldering should be able to do that with no problem.

Personally, as Ryan suggested earlier, I'd look for that phase switch on the circuit board for the piezo, much easier than flipping the magnets (although, that's no big either).
