  • LP needs some new pickups, Help Please

Hello Everyone. I have a Paul Reed Smith Tremonti SE, which is pretty much a Mahogany Les Paul Style guitar, but with the pretty headstock Anyways, I love it, but the pickups arent doing it for me; they are more vintage sounding than I like, and the neck has way too much bass for me. So, I'm looking for a new set of pickups to buy. Here is what I'm shooting for.

    1. My guitar model is known for being bassy, so if the pickups lack a *little* bass, no worry.

    2. I'm more into the Hardcore/Screamo/Emo scene then anything else, so I'd like some modern-sounding pickups. However, I'd like to switch to the neck pickup at times and do some lighter, clean stuff. The bridge, however, is going to be my distortion pickup. Also, the more versatile the pickups are the better.

    3. I perfer a semi-scooped EQ, really just scooping some of the mid/upper mid's, but only a tad.

    4. So far I've been looking at the JB for the Bridge, and possible a Jazz for the neck. Might this be still a "vintage" combo?

Thanks for helping me out anybody/everybody!

sounds like JB/Jazz would be perfect for you........the JB does sometimes have annoying upper mids, but in a mahogany guitar, i bet they would be neutralized a bit

the JB has tight solid bass and a great distortion sound, really cuts

the Jazz is very articulate and has great cleans with out the woofy overwhelming bass that say, a 59 neck humbucker might have

i think JB/Jazz would be awesome for what you want

For your setup and style, I think JB/Jazz will work also.
The JB is great for "modern" power chords. It's very punchy.
The Jazz is warm and glassy. It can also really sing with gain.

          VERY WELL SAID FLANK!!!

          +1

If you were not happy with the JB I would say a Distortion in the bridge...a JB/Jazz combo sounds like it would be great for what you want but the Distortion/Jazz ombo would be killer for that too!
If you just read a post by The Guy Who Invented Fire please understand that opinions change, mind sets change and as players our ears mature...not to mention our needs grow and change. With that in mind, today I may or may not agree with the post you just read!

Thanks alot guys. I agree, Flank . Anyways, Christmas is around the corner, and I couldn't think of anything better than some guitar upgrades, since I'm getting a new amplifier for my birthday (2 weeks before Christmas), so I figured this would be the place to ask for some advice. Thanks again guys, I'll go listen to the clips of the JB and Distortion some more.
