Pickups and Hetfield

Re: Pickups and Hetfield

Hmm, i know at one point he used an emg-60 in the neck and an emg-81 in the bridge, im pretty sure thats the guitar you're wondering about.

Re: Pickups and Hetfield

He used a S&D distortion in the neck and an invader in the bridge, if im not mistaken...

Re: Pickups and Hetfield

WOW! Thanks for the link. That article says the V was a copy of some sort. Everything else I've read says it was an Epiphone. Did he have more than 1 white V?

Re: Pickups and Hetfield

He only had that one V and it was a copy. James has said this a few times, but never mentioned the actual brand. At some point, he did change out the bridge pickup for a Duncan Invader. I haven't really read anything (from "real" sources) that says he changed the neck pickup, so it might be stock (I don't think he used it much back then anyway :)).

Re: Pickups and Hetfield

Lol, they were probably stock cheap humbuckers. They were using tubescreamer boosts in front their amps back then so perceived eq curve and output of any pickup used would be skewed.

Re: Pickups and Hetfield

This is a close up pic of the guitar pickups from a 1985 magazine article. Looks to me like both pickups have two rows of screw poles - not an Invader like everyone says. MJ at the Custom Shop looked it up in her logs, and she made pickups just like these for James around the time they recorded Kill Em All. She says they were based on the Holdsworth model. Alnico 5 magnets wound to around 17k. She has it in her precious log book. I also have one of these guitars stock (in cherry red) and they do not come with pickups that look like this.

Why bump the 11 year old thread to add this? This subject and info has been posted here before in newer threads...

But the simple fact of the matter is if you dig around you can find pictures of this guitar with the invader, with emgs and with the double screws...

Bridge humbucker looks like dual slugs.

Re: Pickups and Hetfield

there are a lot of picks, at kill 'em all they were the custom duncans, on ride the lightning era the pictures shows that the guitar was having the invader (the picture is black and white, kirk's v is also there) and the last pics from before the guitar was retired clearly shows EMG's 81 in the bridge and possibly the 60 on the neck
