'78 vs. JB/A2 ?

Anyone ever had the chance to compare a '78 custom & a JB w/ an A2 magnet swap? I have a few JB's layin' around & thought a magnet change might help it's sound in a LP-style guitar...Any insight would be appreciated!

They have some similarities but 78 is much more open, less nasal, more articulate. some have said the JB2 is like a overwound 78?

I have a JB2 in an LP, much better than the stock magnet. Haven't tried out my '78 yet, but I suspect a JB2 is warmer, as it's 16K vs 9K for the '78. If a JB2 sounds too warm or compressed, an UOA5 or A4 will open it up some, but not be too bright or overpowering. Try it and let us know how you like it.

Thanks for the feedback, guys! Since my latest project isn't finished yet,I will probably experiment w/ the JB's in my alder strat & basswood hot-rodded jaguar;these guitars sound remarkably close thru my Mesa DC-3! As for the 'JB/A2-as-overwound-'78-consensus, I wonder if the low-end of the JB will tighten up a lil'? I'll find out n' let ya know!

I put roughcast A5s in two of my JBs and it softened up the bass a bit, gave the pickup more of a chewy flavor. This will sound crazy but the for me the stock JB was a little boomy playing thru my bedroom rig. I would assume an A2 would do somewhat of the same thing.

the RC5 was the original magnet used in older JB's and i can hear why!:cool2:
IMHO the RC5 version is the best then the A2 version

I think JB's with the stock mag are sometimes boomy in certain guitars, due to the abundance of low end that A5's have. I think any other magnet has less bass, and may solve that problem. JB2's in mahogany don't seem to be as bassy or loose as stock JB's. I think it's an overdose of low end.
