Duncan Distortion or JB.

alder/maple/rosewood strat bridge only. title says it all. want to transform this guitar into a metal axe. some down tuning involved. need chords to ring out nice and clear. also like tight bass for chugging, no mid honk, and sparkly treble. thinking thr dd is the way to go.

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB.

no custom for me. trying to get away from any PAF flavor. i've been waffling between the JB and the DD. i like both, but can't afford to try both.

From what you described yes the DD is the way to go

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB.

I hear the Custom 8 can do the job well as described. But I have never tried it. Also, I think it has more bottom end than the DD and JB.

They both can scream.
For chewy leads... JB
For hard-hitting chords, down tuning and overall tightness... Distortion

I am using JB with a ceramic, and it does both convincingly, but the amp needs be slightly re-EQd for each purpose. And... there's nothing PAF or vintage about, it's all metal/hard rock all the time.

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB.

For what you just described, I would recommend either the DD or a Super Distortion.

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB.

Then why did you even put "JB" in the title?

Seriously, give the Custom a try, you might be surprised to find it's not "wimpy old-guy Jazz geetar trying to play Metal" at all.

'cause i've read so many mixed reviews on the jb that i thought i'd still consider it. i just don't like the idea of "chewy" leads or loose bass response or a pronounced "honk", and that's why i think the DD is the way to go for me. now i am wondering if i should use a 250k or 500k pot. i only use a volume with no caps or anything else and this will be a bridge only guitar, i just don't like neck pickups.

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB.

The JB would be plenty tight if you swapped to an A8 magnet over the A5, if you have a jb around try it....The DD is the bees knees though for metal....I like both....

Are you basing that on what you've read on Duncan's site? I make recommendations based on the sound that people are looking for. That's why I don't go into threads where people are asking for a clean neck pickup sound, as I don't play clean, and I don't use neck pickups. Detuned metal in a bridge pickup in a Strat with a rosewood neck? That I can recommend pickups for. Metal is all I play, and my guitars are tuned to open C or open B. Most of my guitars are Strats, they're ALL rosewood, and most of them have alder bodies.

I know you only want a bridge PU, but IMO, you're gonna end up wanting a new neck pup too. I'd get the distortion for the neck, and the JB for the bridge. The Jb will sparkle with cleans, but the distortion gets into the chugs.

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB.

Between the 2 I say distortion. Bit seriously the custom is a beast of a metal pickup. I use it in my explorer and my carvin dc127. My band tunes to c# standard we we do a combo of doom/death/thrash/sludge. Some of the most extreme genres out there. I also use a distortion in my soloist. Its a violent little booger. Very great pickup. However there may be a custom being dropped in it soon.

Re: Duncan Distortion or JB.

Yeah don't buy in too much to the PAF thing about the Custom. There are some notes or undertones that may remind you of some older PAF type tones and the overall tone is a bit more timeless than say the DD. But the pick up is a MONSTER, especially for tight metal/thrash chugging on those low strings. It does not have the output of the DD so you might need to use more distortion on your amp or use a pedal. But it does down tuned C# very well for me. Other than that, the DD is probably the route to go. The JB may be a bit too loose for what you want.
