Routing for EMG's

Hi all.

I was talking to a friend of mine about swapping the EMG's out of my Hamer and installing passive humbuckers. He told me that it might be difficult, due to the fact that EMG's are slightly bigger than passives, necessitating a larger rout in the body. Is this true? Will it be possible for me to install a set of Duncans in place of the EMG's?

they're on the mount rings anyway..

well, if they EMG's are bigger then you'd have a problem puttig them into the axe as a replacement for passive pups.

Direct mounted, pickguard, or in a ring mount?

If the EMG's are bigger and ring mounted, new rings should fix any issues (and you may not even need new rings).

Pickguard? See above. Even if EMG's are bigger, you'll just have a little larger space around the pup.

Direct mounted? Well, I'm not sure about that. I've never had EMG's in a direct mounted axe. I'm GUESSING that you still are unlikely to have problems...the problem with direct mounting is usually in that the cavitys aren't big enough to accept the new pickups IME.

I've switched out EMG's, Duncan, Dimarzio in pickguarded axes with no problems in the past.

I especially don't see a problem if you are taking the EMG's OUT and putting passives IN.

nope... i dont think so. if you're goot too much space beneath them, just stick some foam in there or something like that.

The size difference between EMGs (as long as we're talking six string) is VERY small... just enough to be a problem occasionally. I had to route a Jackson to get them in, but they dropped right in an Epi Les Paul, several ESP guitars & several Ibanez guitars.

I don't think you should have any problem.
