  • EMG 81/85/60 Vs Seymore Duncans High output Pickups.

I may be getting new pickups for christmas, or money to do so. Can someone please give me an UNBIASED decision on these PUPS. I like the more midrange tone, and enough distortion to get some great Pinch Harmonics ala Zakk Wylde. So Far the EMG 60N/81B is winning out. I have heard the JB and Jazz are a great combo. I'll appreciate any advise.

I think i may be able to help with this one?
of the duncan pup's stock i say the distortion set is the closest to the zakk tone.
the JB/jazz set is more versitle BUT NOT as aggressive or ZAKK Like.
really though if it is the EMG tone(zakk and many other users) you like the best you aint gonna nail it with a passive. just get the EMG's in this case

I had an 85n/81b setup in my LP, and it's now a 60n/81b. In my opinion the 85 is a better lead neck pickup, the extra bass helps slur the notes, and makes legato runs sound very smooth. I'm not very good a pinching, but I could do them fairly consistently with the 85, and they would scream. I switched to a 60n because I'm primarily a rhythm player, and the bass on the 85 was mudding my chords too much. The 60 is much more difficult to get a pinch out of, and when you do they don't scream like they do with the 85.

Changed my mind out of the 60 I'll switch from my rythm and treble Toggle frequently. I like the full spectum. I like the bassy sound On the rythm pickup on a clean tone. This may sound totally MORONIC, but the Rythm toggle on the Paul is set to the bridge Pickup correct? If so I play mostly on the Treble.

with the toggle set to treble the bridge pup is on only
with the toggle in the middle BOTH pups are on
with the toggle set to rhythm the neck pup in on only

go EMG 81 in the bridge and a 85 in the neck or just buy this!

My experience with a Seymour Duncan Invaderset tells me that it may be a good set-up for you, though I tuned the guitar down more than Zakk I could deffinetly get the pinch harmonics.
DD is great, this is another one to consider.

                    +1.

Back in the days before high gain, the neck was the rhythm pickup. People would use the extra treble and bite of the bridge to "stand out" from the rhythm section.

But, under high gain the neck usually gets too muddy, so most people use the bridge as their high gain rhythm pickup, and either use the bridge for cutting leads, or switch to the neck for smoother, bassier lead sounds.

I typically play rhythm on the middle postion, with the necks volume turned down to about 5-6. High enough to add low end chunk, but not so high as to mud up.

I've always thought the Rhythm/Treble labels didn't make sense. Why not Rhythm/Lead, Bass/Treble, or, god forbid, Neck/Bridge?

Dude that would be too simple........Anyways Im glad to see that im not the only one was mixed up on this. Anybody play the dimebucker?....I wonder how a Dimebuck in the bridge and a DD neck position, would work for my style. Again I have heard the reverse setup of EMG 81/85 with The 85 in the bridge(more midrange) with the 81 in the neck. Rythm and Lead would have been much better though IMO for the toggle switch.

But, would rhythm mean clean rhythm (ie, neck), or high gain rhythm (ie, bridge)? (same for lead, but reversed)

Atleast with treble you know they mean the bridge....
