  • Pickups and Pots-Jackson DKMGT and SD Content

Hi, this is my first post, although i have looked around here for awhile.

I just got an SD Sh5 for my bridge and an APII for my neck for my Jackson DKMGT.

I am going to have them installed soon and I also want to replace my pots because mine are scratchy/crackly and sometimes my volume pot cuts out my volume altogether.

A-How much will this cost-just an average
B-What type of pots are good (brand) and what type do i need (500k, 250 k etc) and how will they affect my tone.

Thanks for all the information and I plan to stay here for quite some time.

Edit-Someone said i will need longer pots because my guitar has a carved top...

www.jacksonguitars.com look up DKMGT-is this true?

    Another question-

Will the Custom be a bit hotter/more powerful than the HZ? What about tighter?

How will mixing the custom and apII sound?

I am playing thrashy styled metal with the bridge a lot of the time...but i need versatality because i dabble in a few different styles so i need different tones (including cleans).

Just wondering what you guys think of the Custom doing thrash stuff.

yea, you'll need the long shaft pots due to the arch top.. i think. not too sure though. it never hurts to get them.

you should be getting 500k pots and they shouldnt alter your sound as 500k's are already installed (most common pots for humbuckers)

i dont know how hot the HZ's are, but the custom/apII set will definately sound a lot better than them

wouldn't they be too long if my guitar doesnt need them?

also what is the average price for replacing pots and installing new hb's

they arent that long and i think you can fit them into the dome knobs without a problem, if not, then you just cut them (i think they're plastic, but i can be wrong)

i really wouldnt know how much people charge for a pot and humbucker swap as i do it all myself. it really isnt that hard

Not all carved top guitars need long shaft pots. I have two guitars with carved tops, they don't require long shaft pots. In fact, Les Paul's are the only guitars I know of that require long shaft pots, although there are probably others. Pots come with two washers, which you can use to adjust the mounting height. I would go with 500k CTS pots, a Switchcraft toggle switch, and a .022 uF Orange Drop capacitor. All of that combined will run you about $20. Just make sure you get split shaft pots, unless you're using knobs with a set screw (like metal dome knobs.) In that case, get solid shaft pots.

              Thanks guys.

They are being installed as we speak.

Now i would just like opinions on the a2p and custom!
