wide range adapter?

Thinking about replacing the WRHB in my 72 thinline reissue and I was wondering if anyone makes a baseplate or other adapter that allows you to use a "normal" humbucker without having to drill or replace the pickguard.

Re: wide range adapter?

Honestly, it would probably cost about the same as a new pickguard. Warmoth pickguards are apparently not guaranteed to fit like stock. Maybe try www.pickguards.com .

Re: wide range adapter?

You can buy pickup adapters from Terrapin Guitars. I bought a pickguard from there and was very happy with the result. Also, unless you have something specific in mind, have you considered trying different wide-range pickups. I think the re-issues are just regular humbuckers with a different cover. I have a neck WRHB in my tele and I love the sound!

Re: wide range adapter?

You could also take apart the existing WRHB and whatever new HB you wanted to replace it with. Use the WRHB baseplate/cover and the new HB bobbins/magnet. Pop the slugs out and replace them with the screws from the WRHB. I just did this in my '72 Deluxe and it worked great. Threw in a SD '59 with no adapater ring, no new pickguard or anything and it keeps a consistent look with much improved sound. Purists may not like the 'Fender' cover over a Duncan, but I'm alright with it.

I like that idea. Not something I had thought about, but genius.

That would only work on the new ones. The old ones are built differently. Besides, nobody in their right mind would tear apart an old one. LOL

I was thinking something like a full size filtertron, I don't have that kind of sound available from any of my other guitars.

I was thinking about selling the existing pickups to cover part of the cost of new pickups, but using the existing base plate is a great idea.
