Can anyone explain how a 3 conductor pickup can have a coil split? Check out this Ibanez wiring diagram that shows a standard 5way switch and v7/8 pickups.

Do these kind of pickups have special wiring requirements? I recently wired some 3-conductor INF pickups in "standard" wiring by combining the ground wire with one other wire (the 2 and 4 positions combine the middle single with a humbucker), but I'm getting 60 cycle hum in the full humbucking positions.

IOW, is a 3 conductor pickup no different than a 2-conductor + ground? Can any 2-conductor + ground have a coil tap?

My guess is the series connection is inside the pickup and only a single conductor comes out from there to handle the split. When you ground that wire, it appears it grounds out the screw coil. So you can only do one kind of split (can't choose which coil to split to).

So for normal wiring, then you would leave one wire disconnected?

Imagine the series link (white+red) as one conductor.

Yup, just leave the series link wire disconnected (preferably isolated) for series wiring.

How would I test the pickup to find which one is the link wire, and which is ground?

            A multimeter is your friend.
