  • Anyone have a Distortion/Custom Hybrid

I tried searching for any threads on this, but I didn't see anything. There were a lot of threads about the custom mathced with other things, but I didn't see the Distortion in any of those threads...

Anyway, I just replaced a Custom 8 with a Distortion in my Yamaha SG-1000 and I got to thinking that a hybrid of these pickups might be a cool concept. Has anyone done this hybrid yet? If so, what are your impressions of it? If you haven't, what do you think of doing a hybrid of these two pickups? Which coils of the the pickups would you use in the hybrid?

    Thanks all!!!

It should be similar to the JB/Custom hybrid, unless of course you use the double thick ceramic, which would make it quite a bit hotter.

I guess it would be similar to the JB/Custom since the Distortion and JB are fairly similar winds. Have you used the JB/Custom hybrid? What is that one like?

There was a whole thread posted up about one here about a month ago.

I guess I will go search for it... I did see a few posts in a JB/Custom hybrid thread, but there wasn't much in terms of sound. They just mentioned they liked it... Thanks!

So... Is the consensus to use the screw coil of the Custom and the slug coil of the Distortion for a hybrid???

Re: Anyone have a Distortion/Custom Hybrid

I've used JB/Custom hybrids with a ceramic magnet (some say the Distortion and JB coils are the same or very similar) in two different guitars for a few years (and I've tried it with an A2, A3, A4, A5, and A8 magnet) and the Custom for about 12 years. For reference, the guitars are hardtail PRS with a maple neck and ebony board and a mahogany/maple San Dimas through a JCM800-style amp. The Ceramic magnet in this hybrid is a big winner. It takes the Custom and flattens out some of the "boxy" midrange and seems to have extended lows and highs. The clean sound does suffer as the low mids are hard to EQ out on my amp. Distortion-wise, it will get "chugga-chugga" heavy and stay really tight and clear, even with a ton of saturated gain. There is a ton of high-end, you'll have no problem cutting through a mix or having really loud pinch harmonics. The Alnico 8 is also good, just thicker sounding and not as tight. The Ceramic makes for a better rhythm tone and the A8 makes for a better lead tone, in my opinion. I'm surprised Seymour hasn't released a production model, this is a killer pickup.

Thanks! I might just have to snag a Custom Shop hybrid! Thanks again!!!

I'd like to hear one with the double thick ceramic along with ceramic spacer magnets. Or even an A5 with ceramic spacers.

I would like to hear any form of one... Are you aware of any clips or videos of one?
