  • Any folks tried the Duncan Mini's?

    The mini HB's that is.

I'm pretty confident that the stock Gibsons will sound good on the LPD I've got coming (based on THIS clip)

But, ya never know. From the soundclips page here...The Custom sounds a bit shrill/brittle compared to the Seymourized version. I was hoping it would sound more like a SH-5.

Any input would be appreciated, thanx

I believe XSSIVE put a neck model in a telecaster of his and he seems to really love it. I'm sure he'll chime in in due time.

You have to remember that not all mini-humuckers are created the same. There are actually two varieties of mini-humbuckers.

        1. Gibson LP Deluxe (Epiphone style) model
        2. Gibson Firebird model

The Firebird PUP is a different pickup from the LP Deluxe (Epiphone) Mini Hum. Both feature Alnico magnets. The Deluxe is just like a MINI HUMBUCKER with the magnet bottom loaded, and with one row of adjustable polepieces. The Firebird pickup has a magnet in each coil, a vertical magnet like a Fender, and has no adjustable polepiece.

MiniHums sound most excellent without any of the muddines typical of bigger Humbuckers while retaining the power and clarity.

The standard Production Duncan mini-humbucker models (SM1, SM2, SM3) are Firebird type. The Aniquity II offers both LP Deluxe and Firebird models.

        The magnet types are:

        1. Gibson - Alnico II
        2. Duncan SM1 (Vintage) - Alnico 5
        3. Duncan SM2 (Custom) - Ceramic
        4. Duncan SM3 (Seymourized) - Alnico 5
        5. Aniquity II (LP Deluxe style) - Alnico II
        6. Antiquity II (Firebird style) - Maybe Alnico II?

          Ahhhh....

I had assumed the the current LPD minis were similar to whats in a Firebird, and the Duncans are variations on the Firebird theme going by what you posted here.

I haven't played a LPD in so long (17 years?), I wasn't quite sure what to expect. But I gather what you are saying Butch is that my new LPD's pups will be high output because it's (in some sense) just a "miniature" PAF style as opposed to a Firebird style pup?

If so, that's very good news.

The difference in tone between the LP Deluxe minis and the Firebird minis is that the LP Deluxe minis' tone will be a little smoother and cleaner, more PAFish than the Firebird minis; which are a little higher output and a little more edgier. That's not necessarily a bad thing either....

                  I have 2 SM-1's in my 67' Melodymaker, Sounds Great! I also have a
76' Firebird with stock PuPs. The neck PuP sounds fine but the bridge
PuP is Shrill to the point of being unuseable. I've love to put a Duncan
SM-3 in the Bridge...But that Guitar is best left alone.

I have a SM-1 in the neck of my Tele. It blends really well with Tele lead pickups. I like it better than any stock style Tele neck pickup I've tried.

I have an SM-3n in the neck of a Tele, and it sounds excellent -- full and warm, clear, good growl and even some bite. It matched well with a 7.1 K Fender Nocaster but even better with a 6.95 K Antiquity Flatpole Tele lead.

I'd still like to know which SM-series mini-HB Joe Walsh was using in the bridge slot of the red Strat he played at the Crossroads festival ("Steamroller" with James Taylor). That tone was awesome, and the pickup clearly was embossed with SD.

Are there dimensional differences between the LP deluxe style and Firebird style minis?

Hey Butch, any idea about the output on the Aniquity II Mini-HB pups, especially the LP Deluxe.

I hope to have an SM-1 in the neck position of my Tele sometime tonight. UPS says the new pickguard will arrive today. Also the tapped QP for the bridge.
