12 String Seymour Duncan Pickups

Diminished Triad

New member
Is there a set of pickups commonly used for 12 string electric guitars? For my next project I want to order a Warmoth designed 12 string electric guitar and outfit it with Seymour Duncan pickups - and would like to know what others prefer for that ringing, harmonic electric guitar 12 string sound.

Thanks!

I don't know of a specific 12 string desingated pickup but Rails would be the way I would go :)

id use cool rails if i was building such a thing

Re: 12 String Seymour Duncan Pickups

I use APH-1s, though it took me quite a while to get there. Some I tried were too much on the low end in the neck, but the other side of the coin was more options on different split coils in the middle position, which doesn't come across as well now with the APH-1s. For me, it ended up being which option I preferred more, and as I have a middle pup anyway, went for the one that played ball as a humbucker in the neck position.

Plenty more scope at the bridge though, with many I quite liked.

Any pickup will do, really. It just depends on what you want from them. If you're looking more for a Double neck/ Page thing, I'd probably go with the WLH set.

Re: 12 String Seymour Duncan Pickups

I don't currently own a 12 string, but my favorite of the ones I've played was a 90s Hamer Eclipse-12 which was loaded with a pair of SD Firebird pups. I'm not sure if they were SM-1s (or maybe SM-2/SM-3) but they sure sounded good.

Re: 12 String Seymour Duncan Pickups

There is usually no specific pickup out there, as the strings are thin enough to both fit over each pole. If you are worried though, anything with rails or a bar magnet across the top would assure you that each string is heard evenly.

Low output is all I really would say. I have used a tele bridge to good effect.

Re: 12 String Seymour Duncan Pickups

I'm going to do a Warmoth 12 based on a strat, and I plan on using G&L Z-Coil pickups from their Comanche. That will give a fat, single-coil tone, yet they are humbucking.
