  • Custom Shop Possibility...

I have been thinking about which humbuckers I will buy to install in my Ibanez 7-string. I was looking through the custom pick-up section of this website when I thought of a custom pick-up that I would like to order, but I wanted to check on this forum and see if you guys thought this pick-up might be a possibility.

I want a 7 string version of the Dimebucker... So, tell me if you guys think that this is something the seymour duncan custom shop could pull off.
    Thanks, -Kac-

interesting. i bet it would be a killer pup, the tonal properties of the dime in a 7 string. and im sure the custom shop will do it if they can but, and this is just speculation, there may be an issue with the blades and the bobbins. give em a call and see what they say. but i really do think the dime would make a killer 7 string pup

Thanks Jeremy, I will be getting in touch with the custom shop to see what they can do, I'll post what I find out.

So I'm e-mailed MJ about my dimebucker 7-string idea, and this is what I got in return:
" The Hot Rails bridge is already very similar in wire gauge and number of
turns to the Dimebucker. He should try that pickup first and see how
close the sound is to what he is looking for. If is is not satisfactory,
depending on what changes he would like to make, we may be able to work
        from there. "

Soooo.... Does the hot rails come in a 7-string version, or do they want me to put 2 of 'em next to each other or what???

I talked to Duncan about a 7 string Dimebucker about a year ago, and ther reply was that they weren´t geared to make them, and the custom bobbins and blades would push the cost to "more than we currently want to charge anybody for anything".

That may have changed since then.

But I´m a bit intrigued at MJ´s response, to my EARS (not spec wise) the Hotrails and Dime have nothing in common, I find the Hot rails much closer to the Invader tonally... interesting....

I'd heard something similar to the first part, and agree with you on the second. I have a feeling that there was a miscommunication, as even if the Dime & HR were similar, what does that have to do with a seven string pickup?

Exactly what I was thinking... Oh well... maybe I'll shoot 'em another e-mail and see if the confusion can be cleared up a little bit, but until then, if anybody has any ideas on how i can get a 7-string Rails pick-up I would greatly appreciate your help.

The blades on the Dime are 2 1/4 inches long, but I'm not sure if this will help you or not because I don't know what the string spacing is on your guitar (a 7 string) or if you have a trem also. The Dime blades are a lot longer than the string spacing on my 6 string with a trem. A Dime does sound cool to try if you can find a way to do it. Good luck!

Well, the width at the 12th fret is 56mm, I can't find the string width, but I would guess it would be too wide for the Diembucker...
It's a hard tail by the way.

                    Re: Custom Shop Possibility...

So, if the dimebucker was placed at the 12th fret it would work because 56mm is equal to 2.24inches and the blade width on the bucker is 2.25inches, since it gets even wider after the 12th fret i don't think the dimebucker will cover in on a 7-string.

For kicks and grins I measured the string spacing on my Jackson DR7. Above the polepieces on the bridge pickup its 60.5mm (2.38in) from string center to center...

Well, there's your answer... mount a Dime at the 12th fret

The only 7 string blade I know of is the EMG 81-7.

There´s also the EMG-707. But both of those also require
                          1. Room for batteries

Yeah, we've discussed that before, and decided against it. I didn't really mean it as a viable option.

FYI, the 707 has Alnico poles, like the 85
