I am getting new pickups and pots, and am thinking i should try to install them myself, i have studied the diagrams and looked at the inside of the guitar enough to know where to solder. I have never had any actual experience with a soldering iron. I suppose i could try soldering some scraps of wire to get the hang of it. Should i try to do it myself, and if i should, what kind of soldering iron should i get?

Re: should i install?
get a 40 watt soldering iron
practice is a good idea ... the important thing to remember is to go slow, be careful, not too much solder, have someone there to help you because, until you get experience, it can be a job that takes 3 or even 4 hands ...
the proud feeling of accomplishment you get when you play a guitar you wired yourself is worth it
good luck
have fun

Re: should i install?
I have gotten pretty good at the actual soldering but then the the wire moves on me and creates a crappy joint. What do you use to hold the wire down to the pot. I've heard about people using clips but I've look at Wal-Mart and every hardware store we have and have found nothing that would fit in there. Can you please tell me what you use, and pics of it would help. It would make my soldering alot more hassle free.

Re: should i install?
At times when i've needed a 3rd hand soldering what Ive done is used alligator clips or even scotch or electrical tape to hold something in place... if you cant find alligator clips your local autoparts store should have test leads that have the right kind of clips on them... they are usually a pretty cheap to buy...I usually use them more as a weight than actually using them to clamp to pieces together...Last edited by Edgecrusher; 02-20-2005, 11:50 PM."It keeps you fit - the alcohol, nasty women, sweat on stage, bad food - it's all very good for you." -Bon Scott
