  • BBQ high mid spike like JB?

I dont like the JB high mid spike and was thinking of getting a BBQ . Someone said the BBQ has the same high mid spike as the JB and I dont want that. I have a dual rectifier with a 1994 Gibson LP classic. I am trying to get away from the bandsaw frequencies of this amp. I like the C5, PATB1 pickups but the C5 doesnt have enough mids and the patb1 is a littly boxy and cardboardlike. I like the amount of gain from the patb1 then the C5. The C5 seems a little bright and I could tone thart down with either the patb1 or the BBQ. Just wondering if the BBQ will end my tone search. I am worried about the lack of gain from the BBQ as I like the gain mostly of the patb1. Any thoughts? Thanks

No high mid spike at all with the BBQ. No worry on lack of gain either. It has plenty IMO especially with a dual rec. Nice and meaty and thick.

I agree, I replaced a JB with a BBQ, and it definitely does not have that upper mid spike. I wouldn't worry about the output level, it has slightly less output than a C5 to my ears, but with a Dual Rectifier you should be able to get all the gain you need. I prefer to get my gain from the amp rather than the pickup.

The BBQ is actually rather clear and articulate for being so darn thick and meaty. I could live on this pickup! I don't hear any upper mid spike.

IN CLEAR DO YOU MEAN MINIMAL DISTORTION? WHERE DO YOU FIND THE BBQ LACKING. ARE THE CLEANS AS GOOD AS A C5 OR JB?

My thoughts exactly. I have it installed in my custom made guitar, lots of maple and mahogany, I use a marshall TSL122, I play in a blues-rock band and also do some dep work for covers/club/cabaret bands, and these pickups and amp combo are the most versatile setup I have owned.........so far.
The Rio's are superb p'ups to my ears with no spike in any frequency. Warm and articulate, eq the amp a little and you get nice funk/pop sounds, great.

What's the spacing on the BBQ? ... from center low E to center high E.

                  In Millimeters ... thanks.

                    +1

I would love to see Duncan make a comparable pickup. It just has so much going on with it - thick, meaty, articulate, and warm.....yet the perfect output. It's a real take charge humbucker.

I love the cleans but I also love the cleans of the C-5 and JB. The BBQ has thicker cleans with more body to my ears. It's a louder pickup.

Sorry, I don't have any way of recording clips. As for the polepiece spacing, it's a little wider than a standard spaced uncan, but not as wide as a trembucker. I think they designed them to line up perfectly with a Tuneomatic bridge.

                        Thanks Ryan,

So a BBQ would maybe just fit a Floyd Rose bridge but not a Fender trem ..?

It should fit just about any guitar with no problem. Since Rio Grande doesn't make separate spacings for their humbuckers, they went with a one size fits all plan. It may not line up perfectly in a guitar with a trem, but it should be very close, closer than if you'd used a standard spaced pickup.

The Rio Grande BBQ is specifically said to NOT have a mid spike, instead its EQ is focused more on the low end and low mids, so I'm not sure it sounds much like the JB.

The BBQ and the JB dont sound at all alike... not only the differences in the mids but also the jb has more highs that bbq. A quality I really like in the bbq
