  • BBQ with a 1 meg volume and 500k tone in L.P.Classic

I bought a BBQ and love the pickup but it was too dark. I installed a 1 meg volume from Torres engineering and it helped but was still darker than any Duncans. I then installed a Gibson 500k volume pot on the tone and now its bright enough but lacks the oomph it had witht the 300 gibson tone pot. Is there a difference in volume and tone pots or pots are all the same? Do you think that because the ratings are so high on these pots that it is affecting the tone of the pickups in a bad way? Your thoughts please.

there is no real difference between pots used for volume and those used for tone. a 500k audio taper pot is just that and could be used for either. some people might prefer a linear taper pot in either volume or tone but when full up there is no tonal difference.
in general i think tone suffers with 1 meg pots, the high frequency that it lets pass is too high for my tastes. i think 500k pots are the way to go for buckers

Yeah, go with 500k pots for all the controls. If you want a little extra brightness, get some pots from Blackrose, they sell 500k pots that actually measure closer to 600k...or at least they used to, I haven't been to their site in a while.

I went thru every combo of 300, 500 and 1 meg pots except 1meg on tone and volume. I made some sound clips and will compare to see waz up. The pod makes every pickup soound good so I dont know how accurate this comparison is? Do you think the 1 meg on the tone with a 300 or 500k on the voulume is ok?

500k on the volume and 1 meg on the tone should do it. I tried nearly every trick with a Dimarzio megadrive and that worked the best.

The BBQ is a very nice pup, but it is a dark, and had too much low end for me with my setup. That's why I eventually replaced it.
