  • I'm replacing a Dimarzio X2N...

    Hi--

I'm taking a Dimarzio X2N out of a Gibson doubleneck six's bridge(yeah, I'm keeping it). I love the drive, sound and distortion the pickup has but not the clarity which is muddy to me. Is there a Duncan that can rival the X2N for the drive & distortion but give the clarity of say the 59 or JB? Man, that JB is one GREAT pickup, huh? The X2N just seems to have more massive distortion (to my ears anyway--hey, I'm an old man!).

Was also thinking of putting a set of Antiquities which I already have in the six. Even though I have them, I'm trying to decide which guitar to put them in--the doubleneck six or a 75 Les Paul Custom which currently has Dimarzio super distortion humbuckers in it. When I A/B this LP with my 72 deluxe with a JB, the 72 pulverizes my 75. I've also noticed that unplugged, the 72 is brighter and has more or that "electric" guitar sound than the 75 which is very dark and almost sterile. Got the same strings on both. I thought they were made of the same wood, but I'm a dumb@$$ anyway. Any suggestions?

    Thanks everyone.

hmm sorry, but can you clear this up a bit?

from what i understand, you are wanting to change the X2N in the six of your doubleneck. you already have a set of Ants. you already have JB in your 72 deluxe, wich is staying.

what i don't get. when you say "the 75" are you referring to the doubleneck?

I think he means he's got those three guitars.. the Gibson double neck, a 75 Les Paul, and a 72 deluxe Les Paul?

        Re: I'm replacing a Dimarzio X2N...

        Hi--

Sorry man. The guitars are as follows--a 1977 doubleneck, a 1972 Les Paul deluxe (no mods intended) and a 1975 Les Paul Custom.

What I'm looking for: The distortion and sound that the X2N gives but with clarity, not mud. This would go in the doubleneck. I was toying with the idea of putting the antiquities in the doubleneck to keep the sound all around classic but the guitar sounds so good with the aggresive pickup I'm a little undecided.

I originally bought the antiquities to go in the 75 Les Paul deluxe. When I compared the sound of the two Les Pauls unplugged, the 72 was bright and snappy where the 75 custom seems dark and a little lifeless. Plugged in, the 72 deluxe sounds just KILLER with the JB in the bridge and the original mini humbucker in the neck. The 75 LP Custom has Dimarzio super distortion humbuckers and sounds muddy, lifeless, dull etc...

I'm wondering if the two Les Pauls could be made out of different wood and what pickups would bring my 75 Custom to life. I've got JB's in two guitars so I didn't want to go that route again.

Whew! Any opinions or experiences greatly appreciated. Hope I cleared up what I'm looking for.

For distortion AND extreme clarity, you cant go wrong with an L-500XL. www.billlawrence.com

You can't have massive distortion and clarity at the same time , what you should do is put a medium oupût like the custom serie ( i personnaly use C-5 bridge and demon neck ) or even a screaming demon and have a good amp that will provide distortion , then you will have a lively guitar .

              Re: I'm replacing a Dimarzio X2N...

Hey man, i'm no guitar genious, but this is my opinion.

You say your 75 sounds dark and lifeless while the other is bright. In the 70s (correct me if i'm wrong) they made some LPs all mahogony. Most LPs have a maple cap to add brightness. There is a chance your 75 may be all mahogony. If so, that's the reason for the mellow sound. Try knocking on the top of both guitars. If the 75 sounds deeper than the others, that's probably the case. Either way, you need a really bright pickup. You'll need something with a ceramic magnet. Also make sure the pickup doesn't have much bass since the guitar it'self is bassy. Blackrose sells pots that are over 500k you may want to try those. As for the pickup someone else wil recommend you a better one than me.

BUT, if I were you, since you already have the JB and the Ants, i would put the JB in the 75 with 500k+ pots, and put the Ants in the 72. That would make a killer classic LP and would brighten up your 75.

Ditto. IMO, you can get massive distortion from ANY pickup, as long as you have the right amp and other things. If you depend on a pickup for massive disortion, it's most likely going to be muddy. If you want massive distortion and clarity at the same time, your best off with a medium to high output pickup (but not too high) and depend more on your rig for the tone you want.
If you have a heavy pickup AND a heavy rig, your going to get mud.

I disagree. What about pups like the Full Shred or EMG 81? aren't they supposed to be extremely clear and articulate under high gain?

Yes, and I agree with you. Wait till I post a clip of that L-500XL and Full Shred, you will see massive gain and clarity, its like a fender twin reverb on one side, and a Powerball on the other.
