  • Pickup for Thrash in Jackson KV2T?

Hi guys im new to the boards and seymour duncan pickups. I figure this question has been asked a million times but please help me if you can. I have a USA Jackson KV2T with a 59 in the neck and JB in the bridge. To be honest I HATE the way the JB sounds and am looking for something that will give me an Exodus/Testament crunch and good soloing sound. I'm running my Jackson through a 5150 head and 4X12 Cab right now. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Yeah, the JB sounds like my stratocaster

I don't know any of those bands mentioned, but I like the Invader.

Duncan Distortion. Best metal riffing pickup ever! Sounds great in my Charvel 650xl through my 5150.

after a lot of asking and research and sound clipsi have come to the conclusion that the ducnan custom is the best bet for thrashin metal!
it has the crunch, good solo tone and perfect output for a 5150 or other high gainer.
I tried the JB and also did not care for it that much,it was OK but i am willing to bet the custom will blow its doors off!

          ^^ oh yes it does

i think thet sh-5 Custom is your best bet, it's definitely hot enough for thrasf and has a nice chunky sound for riffing and gest even better for lead!

I'm surprised you don't like the JB.

I have experience with several Duncan humbuckers, but I've never tried the Distortion OR the Custom. What are the differences and how do they compare to the JB, Screamin' Demon, and Invader?

I find the Custom to be a bit more open sounding than the JB or Distortion. It is still a great pickup, but I prefer the tone of the Distoriton. Although I've got a Custom in a basswood body guitar while the Distortion is in a poplar body. The JB I've got is in a mahogany body guitar so any comparison I can make between these three pickups must take the body wood into consideration as well. In my guitars, the Distortion has more beef, the JB is brighter, while he Custom has a good balance between the two. I find I can get many more harmonics out of the Distortion and JB, though. Try one and if you don't like it, Duncan has their 21 day exchange policy.

Maybe you'd like the Custom over the JB. It's more like your description. More crunch, agressive, scooped.

EMG 81's are nice but not an option on this axe. I'd have to cut into the body to make the cavities bigger and with an axe this nice that's a no no. Anyways I have two other guitars with a dual 81 setup so a difference in tone is also what im after. I think I am going to try a Duncan Distortion and Full Shred combo out to see how it sounds.

You won't be disappointed with the Distortion. If you are, you don't like metal.

You would like the FS in the neck. Trust me. And Mayhem, how can you like Mayhem an not know who Testament or Exodus are?

travis im gonna try the distorion in the bridge. Since we both play through the same amp I'm sure it'll kill in my axe, some of my tech friends recommended it today as well so it's pretty much a go. When i get more cash i'll drop a full shred in the neck. I'll let you guys know my impressions as soon as i play through it. Thanks for the advice and input guys it always helps to have experienced opinions. By the way what settings do you use on your 5150 for a thrashy sound just out of curiosity?
