What if any are the differences,Sound wise

the evh frankenstein that is EVH branded but made by duncan is one of my favorites. it is pretty similar to the SH11 but i liked it a lot more. I wish i could say more but it's been a minute since i played a CC. the EVH i own and it slays. i think i remember the CC being a little more compressed and a bit less open sounding.

Yes, and with a tighter bass, too.

The Custom Custom would have more true mids.

I think the Custom Custom is the way to go I hear those mids when you listen to the Van Halen first album

the CC has more of the thicker Fair Warning tone. Not to gum up your thinking too much but if your going after the first album the 78 might be your best choice.

I like more output the 78 doesn’t seem to have it

Pure DCR doesn't tell the whole story. I've had a guitar in with a 10K pickup but my old Joe Bonamassa sig pickups, around 7K, blew that guitar away. not even a close competition.

the 78 isnt as hot as the cc, but the 78 gets that first record tone. the cc is thicker and works better for later vh tones. i havent tried the frankie pup enough to give a good comparison but what others have said, little brighter, little tighter than a cc sounds about right

The 78 might sound thin with a Floyd Rose that’s why I think the Custom Custom will make up for that

The 78 doesn't sound thin at all with a Floyd. To be fair, I think we are splitting hairs. I don't think either pickup can't do what the other does with different amp settings. The CC is indeed thicker, but it isn't miles thicker. Listen to your guitar...what does it need?

I agree. I liked the 78 a lot more than the Custom Custom.

                              The Custom Custom lacks treble.

I like peanut butter (the Custom Custom) but with some peanutty crunch (the 78) I like it even better.
