  • Brightening up a Hamer Newport

Love the Hamer but way too middy focused for me. Replaced the Seth Lover bridge with a T top. A little better but not much. I also have a Gibson Wildwood 336 that sounds perfect to me. It's on the bright side but I prefer that for cutting through the mix in anything over a 3 piece band. Wildwood bridge pickup measured 7.4 ohms so I put a SD jazz neck into the Hamer bridge position that measures 7.3 ohms. Sounds great now. Not quite as bright as the maple top 336 but way better than it was. Doesn't sound too thin either. I suspect that the spruce top was effecting the overall brightness. Worth trying if you find your guitar sounding way too dark.

the two guitars are fairly different in some ways, both sweet though. the maple on the 336 vs the mahogany/spruce on the newport is part of the difference im sure
