The CC has midrange, but it's not the honky type of midrange. At least not to my ears. It's thick and smooth. Some decent crunch can be had as well.

Late 70's vibe I'd say Whole Lotta Humbucker, Slash, or Saturday Night Special. But Custom Custom would be perfectly fine, just not my first choice for that.

I've heard great things about the SNS and Custom; I plan to put a Custom in my LP Jr. eventually.

I have the WLHs; I play classic rock and I love the sound from those, so I completely agree with Beaubrummels. Another one to consider would be the Antiquities, they should also give a great 70s sound.
