More prep work. With metal polish none of that is necessary. Worst scenario is residue on the edge of the frets that can be easily removed with fingernails.

Don't worry about it. StewMac has plenty in stock! I heard they are some of Dan's premier clippings.
And if you need to fill in any gaps, StewMac's fingernail filings powder is the real deal; just mix with some
hide glue and you're all set!

With all this in mind, can pickups weaken each other over time while installed in a guitar?

i doubt it, they are far enough away there is probably little overlap
