  • New HSS: Seth Lover(b) and Underwound SSL-1(n)

I've recently prepared a new pickguard for my latest HSS superstrat project. I had a Seth Lover bridge that has slightly higher than 9K dcr and 5,660H inductance.

Now it is on the bridge of the new set up. Moreover it has an underwound SSL-1. Why underwound? Because while trying a new cover thin wire from outer winds got broken. So i had two options; i had to send someone to rewind it or i'd try my luck and unwind some wire and cross my fingers to see if i could save it. It was 6,71K at first and it was too much for neck i think. Now it is 6,07K and i hope it will work great for the clearer neck tone

I bet the slightly underwound neck will sound great!

I think the SSL-1 is usually pretty hot by itself but in my experience, with the same pickup, an humbucker, even with relatively low output like the Seth Lover, might have a higher output.
Anyway even with 6K I think the difference in level could be manageable

Honestly, I think this combo will sound great! What is the other pickup?

6.07k is what the Jimi Hendrix Set is and the Psychedelic Strat set has (I think it's the middle pickup on the latter). It will be fine.

"Unwinding" a coil to repair it is something that I've done more than once... And I've already owned a SSL1 whose original DCR was 6,06k anyway: it sounded totally fine.

            Enjoy with your new PU's!

Indifferent note: I understand your choice since SSL1 and SH55 remain my favourite "mainstream" SC/HB in the Duncan catalog. ;-)

That's what i hope. Because strat neck pickups over 6,1-6,2K may be muddy especially with A5 magnets, spesifically on the wound strings. I did always enjoy lollar and Fralins underwound singles.

I will soon see the results

While SSL-1 is not my favourite single coil but Seth Lovers are awesome humbuckers. Well 9K is a good amount of winding and i may hope to hear some early EVH tunes.

Remember that the middle pickup will likely be out of phase with the other 2, so swap the hot & ground if it is.

That looks like a great setup on paper. I'm sure it'll sound great too.

Magnetic polarity is okay, will check the electrical polarity at the assemble. Thanks
