  • OK what gives?

2016 Fender Pro I Telecaster, ash body, STR-2 neck and STK-2 bridge ... wired properly, but sounds thin and pinched and dark.

2019 Fender American Original Tele Thinline, stock ... sounds like the Folsom Prison concert lead guitar is in your living room.

The Duncan Tele pickups sound like crap next to the stock Fender American Original Tele. Duncan is wired correctly. Really?

What kinda pots you using? For that set I would probably go with 500Ks. Anything less would be too muddy I would think. But I like bright Tele sounds with lots of bite. YMMV.

Even good pickups matched to the wrong guitar can sound less than ideal.

it all depends on your expectations, why did you put those pickups in those guitars, what was your purpose? what different sound were you looking for ?

IME hot single-coil sized pickups are typically darker sounding than their medium/low output brothers.

In the 10 years I've been on this forum, I can't think of a single instance when someone said, "It's wired properly" and when we saw photos of what they did, it was wired properly. As far as thin, that sounds like the wiring is not right. Is it thin in all positions, or only certain switch positions?

I believe thats a modern style tele? IMO modern fenders with cast tuners and biflex truss rod add a lot of weight to the neck and more of less deaden the otherwise open and airy tone of a vintage style neck like the american original, not to mention kills dynamics to a degree. Thats why i stay away for modern style fenders. If it has a modern bridge, even more so. You'll never get the AO's more transparent/open and full tone with most modern teles and strats. Tats not to say they don't have their place, but f you prefer the AOs vintage type of sound and plan to own both, prepare to feel the same no matter what pickups go in it every time you pick up the AO.

Around 20 years ago I spent quite a bit of time in Turkey. At that time standard Squier Telecasters and Strats featured heavily in various live bands I watched. I ws always impressed with the sounds achieved despite the stock low end ceramic pups.

In my experience Teles are remarkably forgiving guitars when it comes to pups, I actually have a chinese SX Tele with the stock ceramic pups which sounds and plays pretty good. Perhaps not quite in the league of my MIM with DM Twang Kings but different as opposed to inferior. .I also havev P90 and 2 HB teles all of which play and sound good...

I would have thought it difficult to find a pup that does not work in a Tele.
