Beginner Help Please - SD JBs with five selector Switch

Hi All,

Absolute beginner here (in fact it will be the first time I have ever soldered) so please bear with me if I say anything silly

I have an Ibanez S521, bought as a second guitar, and I hated the standard pickups that came with it, so finally decided to do my first pickup change. Bought some JBs yesterday.

Guitar is setup for 2 x Humbuckers, one volume, one tone and a 5 way selector switch.

The only wiring diagram I can find on the website that matches this description is “2 Hum, 1 Vol, 1 Tone, 5 Way Blade” and everything on that diagram looks correct for my guitar with one exception. The diagram shows 8 solder points on the selector blade but there are no labels on the diagram for the switch solder points. However, the guitar I have has 10 (not 8) solder points which are all labelled GRD, HOT, COLD etc….

So what im hoping you guys can tell me is the following:-

1. Do I have the right diagram?
2. If so, how do I understand from the diagram which colour wire from the Pickup goes to HOT/COLD/GRD/OUT on the selector switch?

I’ve attached a pic of the diagram from the Seymour Duncan website, and a picture of my selector switch with the solder points labelled.

I have searched the forums, hoping it had already been answered, and it probably has, but the terminology on most of the posts is way above my understanding.

I could take this to my local shop and have them do it, but they want £120, and id rather buy a soldering kit for £25 and learn a new skill, so really hoping you guys can give a beginner a nudge in the right direction.

edit: There is a sticky post about problematic diagrams... of course mine is top of the list Can anyone also help me decipher what is mentioned here, as it sounds like the quality is going to be a lot lower than it should be if i use the diagram as is.

I have this switch on my rg470. Basically:
- out goes to the volume pot. If still connected, leave it
- gnd is ground. As above.
- bridge hot, solder the bridge black wire here
- bridge tap: solder the bridge red and white here
- neck hot: solder the neck black here
- neck tap: solder the neck red and white here.
- solder both neck and bridge bare and green wires to the back of the volume pot.
Plug your guitar cable and measure the resistance at the other end for all 5 positions. Post values here. Good luck, it's fun

i didnt expect someone to come back so quickly, and with such a complete answer. Thank you so much AdrianSD. I have one question from your description... red and white to "neck tap"... the neck side of my selector doesn't have a "tap" it has a GND, 2 x Hot and 2 x Cold?

cheers buddy... i think i have enough to go on from what youve given me... i can see where everything goes, apart from 1 r/w from the neck, which i think can only go two places... so i'll just try both of them really appreciate your help. i'll let you know how i get on. thanks brother
