  • Is the Suhr Aldrich higher output than the JB?

Logic would lead me to believe it is. It is reported to be almost 1K more DCR. They allegedly use the same kind of magnet, I would assume wound with the same wire gauge (44, though I have no way of knowing for sure), and they use similar materials. The spacing is not the same, but it's not like the Aldrich is trembucker-spaced either.

But we all know pickups are more than just published specs. So would anyone with experience with both be able to confirm this, please?

I kinda want a fatter, hotter JB for one of my guitars. I've had my eyes on the Aldrich for a while. Clips seem to suggest it is indeed fatter, or at least throatier. But hard to tell if it's actually hotter. I don't need/want it to be as hot as the Duncan Distortion. Just 5-10% hotter.

    So is it?

    Thanks.

Both of them reside at right about ambient temperature in my experience.

From what I've read you seem to be spot on, but I've never used an Aldrich so I can't tell you for certain.
You will never understand How it feels to live your life With no meaning or control And with nowhere left to go You are amazed that they exist And they burn so bright
Whilst you can only wonder why

Yeah, I should edit that, LOL. I meant "higher output".

I'm just a little upset he was diagnosed with cancer. Who can think about his pickups at a time like this?

          Yeah, I heard he's sick.

But I don't see what's wrong about talking about his pickups. It would be like not listening to his music. I bet he's OK with people talking about his stuff wether he's sick or not.

Couldn't you get to a fatter, hotter JB with a magnet swap, e.g. Alnico 8?

I'm surprised you guys don't get that I understand pickups have nothing to do with health. And I've survived brain cancer for 11 years. I'm sympathetic to the cause.

I'm not being unsympathetic, though. I just want to know how his pickups sound. I didn't mean this thread to be controversial.

Yes, but I'd have to get another JB.

The story here is I have one guitar with a JB. That guitar is naturally loud and fat, and it sounds great.

I have another guitar that's naturally thinner and quieter. I kinda want it to sound similar, though obviously not the same. That's impossible. But I don't have another JB that I can drop in and mod. So by the time I get a JB and a magnet to mod it, I could very well just get another pickup that's kinda like a fat and loud JB altogether. I'm sure different manufactures have their take on that.

Gotcha. I was thinking you already had the extra JB on hand.

                        From brighter/more open sounding to thicker/hotter: SSH+ --> JB --> Aldrich

If you want even thicker and hotter than the Aldrich, check out the Dean "Baker Act"
