  • Pegasus problem

I have a slight issue that I'm trying to figure out. I installed a Pegasus into a 92 Charvel due to being prodded by another guitar player saying that I needed something hotter than the stock pup. I installed it as directed, and through an actual tube amp, it sounds pretty good. However I recently bought a Tonemaster Pro and was poking around in there. What I noticed, is that when I plugged in one of my other guitars with the stock pup, and then switched to the Pegasus loaded guitar, I lost the bottom end. So I'm wondering if I have done something wrong, or could there be another problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What's the other guitar and pickup that you're comparing it to? And how close is it set to the strings? I didn't find the Pegasus lacking in low end but there are more bass-heavy pickups out there, and by modern pickup standards it's not super hot. Maybe it's just a case of using different settings for each guitar on the Tonemaster.

90-92 Charvel Fusion, unknown bladed humbucker with an ohm reading of 8.02. Per the website the Pegasus should be 12.6k ohm. However, since the pickup is already in the guitar, and using a short cable, the readings are all over the place.

By the way, the bladed pickup is the stock pickup.

What is the pickup wired in the guitar reading? The reading in the circuit is very close to the actual reading off the guitar most of the time unless there is something like active electronics or something really fancy in the wiring.

Does the TMP have a meter to see how hot the input signal is? If it isn't topping out the input and the pickup is functioning correctly (and sounds fine through a regular amp), you might have to adjust presets for that particular guitar. This isn't unheard of with digital modelers, though (I do this with my FM3).

Rex, that's part of the problem. The readings are all over the place, and no where near where they should be. And by that, the reading was bouncing between 300 and 400 ohm.

Thanks Mincer, but a stock jackson pickup in a charvette actually sounds better at the moment, with no changes to the presets.

Stick with the stock one, then. What was the reasoning behind switching it out? Was there an issue with the stock one?

Ah, then surely there is a problem with the wiring.

Anything obviously wrong on a visual inspection inside the pots cavity? Wire it directly to the output jack, measure the resistance again and retest into both the tube amp and the modeller.

Thank you Adrian. I think I'm just going pull it apart and start over. Thank you to everyone for the input, I'll report back as soon as it's done.

That's a good move, you might as well install new pots

with the volume and tone controls full up, you should get a solid reading around what the pups dck is so something is wired wrong for sure. as dave says, if the stock pup sounds better, then stick with it. id rewire the pegasus first to see what its supposed to sound like before you make that call though

that's what i am going to do. And if nothing gets better, I'll put the stock one back in.
