Coil splitting

I want to put an APH1 and two APS1's in a guitar I've built in my shop. I want to use a push-pull pot on the APH1 as a coil-splitter. Is the coil-split humbucker going to sound wimpy, and will it be over powered by the single coils in that mode? If so, does anyone have recommendations for a better HSS combination with an eye towards coil-splitting? (No actives, please.)

Re: Coil splitting

Welcome to the forum!
I think the JB has the best coil split tones I've ever heard from a humbucker but the the problem with a pickup like the JB in a SSH guitar is it's so powerful it might overpower your single coils when NOT split.

Re: Coil splitting

That is exactly the problem I have been wrestling with. I'm beginning to think that I can't have it all! Is it possible to somehow attenuate the HB so that it will blend with the single-coils with out losing any dynamics?

Re: Coil splitting

I've never tried the APH-1, but I've tried the APS-1 in a HSH set up. My neck pickup is a 59 and the bridge is a Pearly Gates. The APS-1 was real anemic when used with the humbuckers split. If I was looking for pickups for a SSH set up, I would use bright higher output single coils. Also I would go with a little more output for the humbucker. A Pearly Gates sounds good split. I've never tried a JB but I would imagine it would be well suited when splitting coils.

Oh! It just came to my mind that you could check the Stag-Mag humbucker. It is made with two strat single coils so it should blend very well split. I have never tried it but it is something i looking forward.

Re: Coil splitting

DC resistances:
Coil 1 Coil2
APS-1 6.4 N/A
APS-2b 3.94 3.94
PGb 3.75 4.75 I used gibson burstbucker ratio
JB 8.2 8.2
P 90 8.2 N/A

The JB uses a different wire gauge and would compare split to a 6 or 6.5? At most a 7, you need that in the bridge to balence out volume wise and when you switch it to series (humbucking) and the amp volume is set for the single coils...well...everyone will know you're there.

Re: Coil splitting

Just went out and got the JB. I agree that the APS1 will not match up well. Thinking maybe Quarter-Pounders (?)
